Our community is known for its strong relationships and we take the transition from Primary to Secondary seriously. Last Monday we had a Team Building morning for Y6/7 learners led by the HPE team and this was really well received. On Thursday and Friday of last week the Year 6 learners came into the Secondary School to get a taste of life on the upper floors! The learners experienced a wide range from discrete lessons in Science, English, Humanities, Drama and Computing, to sharing their lunchtimes with the older learners. The feedback from Year 6 learners was excellent, our favourite being this email from Elena in 6W:
"I would just like to say a massive thank you to you and all the teachers who have taught us the past 2 days, I would never ever forget it and I have already made so many connections with the teachers and the classes were unforgettable and I have also made so many friends in Secondary already. I can't wait for Secondary and you guys sure made it memorable."
Our talented Year 9 learners were invited to Accenture last week to showcase their recent Green Technology Exhibition and it was an outstanding experience for them. On Thursday and Friday the Year 9s then participated in a fantastic project: our first Innovation, Careers, Entrepreneurship event. They had to work in teams to create a Smoothie for a given target market and then produce detailed presentations and costings around their ideas. We were thrilled to have Nexus parents, Claude Verly and Jeremy Lewis, as keynote speakers on Marketing and Graphic Design and the judging was incredibly difficult indeed. The learners showed such drive and determination throughout and now have a real idea of what is required to get a business going.
Y12 learners have had an intense end to the year with lots of Internal Assessments being completed as well as data collection trips for the Geographers to Pulau Ubin and Sentosa. They have also completed their Theory Of Knowledge presentations which will be a big weight off their minds as they enter the break looking to finalise their 4000 word Extended Essays.
The Duke Of Edinburgh International Award continues to go from strength to strength. Last week each group of learners had to present their ideas and routing maps in detail to a panel of staff before going on their exhibition at the weekend. We are all extremely impressed with the maturity and dedication of the many learners involved.
As it was the last week of term we have been entertained at lunchtime by our fabulous musicians in the canteen - it is wonderful to be able to give these learners a chance to perform on stage to their peers. Our music programme continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to the full launch of our in-house instrumental programme in August.
Yet more of our wonderful learners have been leading on charitable initiatives over the last two weeks. Year 3 were at the forefront of the 'Ten Foot Tall' shoe collection for the needy and this has been very successful. Some of our Year 10 boys took it upon themselves to raise money to support the Children's Cancer Charity through the Hair For Hope campaign. Yesterday a good number of learners and staff had their heads shaved to show empathy with people who are undergoing chemotherapy.
Please see reports of all the above events on this page.
At this time of year we always say goodbye to some of our community. To all those learners and parents who are leaving we wish you every success with your new adventures. We also say farewell to the following Secondary staff who have given so much to build our vibrant Nexus ethos over the last few years:
Mr Mark Turner, Mr Lee Wilson, Mr James Chandler, Ms Jenny Burgess, Mr Martin Burgess, Ms Michele Newman, Ms Nicola Jordan, Ms Asha Peppiatt, Mr Paul Evison, Mr Ed Gibbons.
It has been a year full of hard work, commitment and excellent progress in so many quarters. The upcoming long holiday is well deserved and I wish you and your children a fantastic break so that they are recharged, ready to go again in August!
Peter Hart, Head of Secondary
As we come to the end of 2018-2019, we leave you with a few of the latest images from our new school.

This is one of two swimming pools that we will have at our new school.
As work continues on the exterior, many of the interior spaces are taking shape. Flooring and ceiling finishes are nearing completion and bespoke furniture and fittings are being added.
The interior design being fitted for the Science Mega Lab which is more than 50 metres long and has working space for up to 72 learners.
