Our Facebook NPG group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/nexusparentgroup/) is a place for all our parents (and other members that are close friends of Nexus) to interact and create a closer community. Please feel free to post questions, reminders or any related comments. Please do refrain from lodging sales posts, we do have the second-hand buy-and-sell group for these posts or advertising your business. Please feel free to also email us at any time npg@nexus.edu.sg
One of our School’s unique pillars is what many parents and staff describe as a special community spirit. The NPG serves two purposes within this community. Firstly, to provide parents with a platform through which to start conversations and provide feedback to the School – to be “a voice of the School community”. Secondly, to offer a range of great social, cultural and special interest events for learners and their families. We welcome all volunteers to join our vibrant and diverse committee, with the main aim of maintaining an inclusive NPG where all ideas are considered valuable.
We have two NPG-organised coffee morning seminars coming up.
Relocation and Repatriation Relocation
10 April, 8:45am NPG Lounge
Are you relocating or going home? What is “home”? Are you stressed about it? Well, the easy solution is to stay in Singapore with us! But if that’s not on the cards, this coffee morning seminar is for you.
Nexus parent, Mel Syers, regularly conducts presentations to members of various expat organisations on the aspects involved in repatriation and moving on from Singapore. She works closely with many of the International Schools in Singapore discussing various aspects, including: the psychological aspects of moving for you and your family, how to choose the right international mover, what you can and can’t take with you to various overseas destinations and a planning timeline.
Nourishing Your Legacy
24 April, 8:45am NPG Lounge
Presented by “The Green Girl” and Nexus parent, Adriana Dimitrova, this seminar will focus on nourishing the body and mind of the growing child: gut health, tips to replace processed food with nourishing options, the importance of organic and the million-dollar question regarding feeding difficult little ones – how to include more vegetables in their diets.
The NPG’s inaugural Race to the East was an enormous success. Parents and friends of Nexus competed fiercely (maybe some teams meandered, but in a very fierce way) as close friends at weekday pick-up became bitter rivals during the Race. Commencing at Nexus, teams performed 11 tasks as they street-fought their way to the proverbial chequered flag at Marine Cove Playground, East Coast Park. Pitstops included finding a mini Statue of Liberty at Haw Par Villa, making balloon dogs, finding the New School Site (a common interest!), walking on low stilts and placing all pitstop tasks in the correct order to be able to finish. Twelve teams entered and with marshals, judges and organisers, over 60 people were involved in this magnificent bonding day. Won by The BTW’s, with second going to The Vikings and third to The Trailing Spouses, a very special mention must be made of the best dressed team, Into the Groove, whose team captain, Annabel, baby-pouched her toddler throughout the entire race. Post-race, snacks and refreshments were enjoyed at George’s Beach Bar at Marine Cove. The NPG organisers easily avoided accusations of nepotism, due to the fact that the President’s team came in a blistering and competitive eleventh! Next year’s race is already in the works and will be bigger and better. We’d like to give a special call-out to Kym and Matthew of Red Dot Races for organising an excellent day that was great fun. RDR plan customised race days for clubs, corporates, societies and private party groups. We couldn’t have done it without them.
The NPG hosted a Q&A Coffee Morning on Wednesday, 20 March. Parents posed questions to Principal Judy Cooper and Deputy Head of School, Stephanie Hughes on wide-ranging topics, including the logistics of the move, safety and orientation at the New School, as well as feedback and questions on number of current issues. Parents were able to ask questions anonymously in advance or attend the coffee morning and ask questions live. Minutes from the coffee morning, prepared by NPG Secretary, Suzie Bacon, will be available shortly.
The NPG team want to extend a warm welcome to new general committee member Penelope Foo. Thanks for joining the team Penelope!
The NPG Lounge is a sanctuary for, and primarily for the use of parents, guardians and helpers. It is a place of safety away from the frenzy beyond its doors. Students and students’ siblings are very welcome to make use of the facilities in the lounge, but not without the presence of an adult. Parents, guardians and helpers are respectfully asked to ensure that their little-ones tidy up the toys and books, play quietly and behave as they would be expected to behave in any other part of the School. Thank you for your understanding.
Following the horrific attack in Christchurch, New Zealand where so many lives were senselessly lost and families torn apart, countless rays of sunshine have burst through the aftermath of the tragedy. For those families that don’t already know, Nexus played a touching part in the beginning of the healing process. Earlier this week, a group of learners from New Zealand visited the New Zealand High Commission, to send messages of aroha (love in Maori), signing the condolence book and meeting with Her Excellency Jo Tyndall, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Singapore. Just like the nation of New Zealand itself, all members of the Nexus community are proud of our diversity and celebration of cultures, and the NPG is so proud of our young Nexus ambassadors for carrying this beautiful message of love and strength through diversity.
See you all for Term 4, have a great and safe break!
Warmest wishes,
Simon Hyett, President
