Primary School Inter-house Track & Field Days

Year 3 - 6 followed their older peers out to Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Thursday. These learners enjoyed a hot and humid day with a small sprinkling to cool us down. For our Year 3 learners, it was their first opportunity to compete in a specialised track and field stadium and they definitely rose to the occasion. There were a number of traditional and developmental track and field events, as well as some fun events and team challenges which were a real hit on the day. Every time someone participated in an event, they earned points for their house. The day culminated with the 60/80 metre finals which was a great way to make some noise for our house representatives.

It was then Nursery and Kindergartens turn to take the stage today. The weather didn’t want to play ball but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits and moved today's events inside. There was so much excitement, and in fact the learners became even louder while they were running, jumping and throwing their way around our gymnasiums. The events that created the most excitement seemed to be the ‘40m Sprint Relay’, the ‘Kangaroo Jump’ and of course the ‘Parachute Popcorn’!

Years 1 and 2 then followed up in the afternoon. The school gyms were a sea of colour and noise for the whole afternoon. The learners were involved in a rotation in which they took part in a wide range of developmental athletic sports activities as well as some of our favourite fun events such as Tug ‘o’ War, that we love to have at every house day. The house spirit was immense The running, throwing, jumping and cheering that was going on was enough to get anyone excited.

A special thank you to our Year 6 and 10 learners who helped to marshall and officiate the Primary school events over the two days. House Cup results will be presented in one of the Year levels' next assembly before they are published to the public. In the meantime, you can click here for plenty of photos of the event on the school's Facebook page to whet your appetite! Congratulations to everyone for their efforts, we look forward to you bringing the same energy and enthusiasm to the Inter-house Swim Gala’s in Term Four.

Nexus 11&U Girls Footballers Continue to Impress in Debut ACSIS Season.

The 11U Girl's Football Team has had a great start to 2019. With 2 more tournaments under their belts the girls are getting a lot of match experience and are developing their skills. The girls had 3 matches this week at ICS. Their first opponent was the strong CIS TK team. Despite dominating play from Nexus during the first half, CIS picked up a few quick goals in the second half and the game finished with a 4-0 victory to CIS. The next match was against a Dulwich, a team that the girls had beaten before. With some strong offensive play the girls won 2-0. The final match against CHISO found the girls once again dominating the play. After some great passing and strong defensive play the game ended as a 3-3 tie. The girls should be proud of the teamwork and effort they showed and are ready to do it all again next week!

We have done it!! After years of trying, we have finally had a very well deserved victory over our great friends and rivals, Singapore American School (SAS), in the ACSIS Division 1 - 14&U Girls Volleyball League! After a tough first set, our Nexus girls dug deep to seal the win at SAS. A very happy bus ride home. Nexus 2 - SAS 1 (18-25, 25-11, 25-22).

In the week prior, Nexus dismantled a talented Canadian Int. School - Lakeside (CIS LS) team in straight sets to secure an ACSIS Division 1 medal. After a slow start, our serving efficiency fired and this proved the catalyst to a commanding win. Nexus 2 - CIS LS 0 (25-11, 25-12)

16&U Boys Basketball Impress With A Dominating Win Over Stamford American School

This past Thursday saw the Under 16 Vipers in action against an always tough Stamford American school who have put up some impressive results so far this season. The Nexus boys have had what can only be called a heartbreaking season so far with an overtime loss to UWC Dover and a slim defeat to powerhouse CIS Lakeside. Thus, the boys wanted to make a statement against Stamford to show the rest of the league that we were certainly title contenders were it not for a few baskets going the wrong way.

Again it was our defense and strong rebounding which led the way to a convincing 38 to 13 victory. SAIS scored the first basket of the game and the 2-0 lead was the last time that they lead all game as we put the pressure on and ran some wonderful offensive plays. Hugo was our floor general who directed us with fine ball handling, excellent passing and solid scoring. We welcomed Mikey back after a two game absence due to elite swimming commitments, and he was a force down low with both his scoring and rebounding. Seth continued his solid play on the inside while Lee was a steady presence on the court. Jamie dropped a lovely 3-pointer and both Marcus and Alex made strong contributions to the result.

Gary came off the bench and scored 6 points to support the victory while Xavier, Yaz, Koyo and Sam saw limited action but all made the most of their time on the floor. It was lovely to see the smile on faces of these boys as they made some baskets or wise court decisions. The U16’s have fast developed into a cohesive unit with many weapons to defeat their opponents.

Our season will end next Wednesday with a final game against the Australian School who are another traditional powerhouse basketball school. The Vipers want to finish the season on a high and a victory against AIS will secure a medal for the boys. Come on down to the gym to watch on the 23rd - you will certainly be impressed by the quality of our Nexus basketball!

14&U Netball Team Continue ACSIS Season in Strong Division 2 League.

Last week our 14&U Netball team played CIS LS (Canadian International School - Lakeside) in a nail biting match. The first half of the game saw each team score goals in succession, even though they displayed different strengths. CIS had a particularly strong defence, who contested every pass with confident intercepts and a close contact game. Nexus players took a while to find their rhythm, as players began to communicate more with each other and drive forward for the ball. Nexus began the third quarter with renewed enthusiasm, to come within one goal of CIS, however errors in the final quarter allowed CIS to move ahead with several goals. The final score was 26-19. Nexus will end the season by playing the Anglo Chinese International School next Thursday at Nexus.

U19 Boys Basketball Keep Season Alive After Dispatching UWCE.

Our Under 19 Vipers had their first game of the new year on Wednesday against UWC-East. With a week of training under our belts to shake off the holiday rust, the lads were eager to get back on the court and continue to roll. Sitting with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, the boys still have their eyes on a possible gold medal in the competition. We knew going into the game the East was a young and rather inexperienced team, however, the Vipers were going to take no team for granted.

We came out aggressive on defence and quickly created a number of turnovers which led to points for our team. It was not long before the Vipers found themselves in a commanding lead which turned in a 40 point advantage with 3 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter (thus, invoking the Mercy Rule when the official scoring stops and the win is automatically granted). Robin continued his fine play and led all scorers with 26 points. However, as all our results have been this year, this was a team effort. Many players contributed to the final victory through their strong defensive play (Niraj and Benjamin), steady court savvy (Holger), powerful rebounding (Alexis) and overall leadership and consistency (Franky). With the result finalised before the start of the third quarter, Terry, John and Kevin saw large amounts of court time which highlighted their improvement since the beginning of the year. All three players made significant contributions.

With another game this Friday against NPS, the boys will be very keen to add another win to their season tally. NPS will certainly want to put on a good show and will be remembering the victory we had over them in last season’s bronze medal game. Holger will be unavailable for this game due to national team fencing commitments so the Vipers will have to pull together and work hard as a unit. Time for the Vipers to strike again!
