Next week Nexus celebrates the world in which we live. Earth Week is a global network that works all year round to solve climate change, to end plastic pollution, to protect endangered species, and to broaden, educate, and activate the environmental movement across the world.
2019 focuses on threatened and endangered species. At Nexus, we have highlighted six species that need our help here, in South East Asia.
We all have a part to play in safeguarding our planet. Next week there will be many ways to support our causes, opportunities to listen to our guest speakers, learn from each other and make a change in your life to preserve our planet. We hope our whole Nexus community will join the movement!
Please remember that on Friday the learners are invited to dress as an endangered animal or to purchase a pin badge to show their support. Please bring in $2 to donate to our good causes.
Year 3 are currently exploring 'How the world works', with the central idea of 'Forces change the natural environment'.
On Wednesday and Thursday next week our learners will have a wonderful opportunity to combine drama with our current Science focused Unit of Inquiry. Each class will have an awesome half a day's workshop with drama specialists from the International Schools' Theatre Association.
On Monday, 29 April we will welcome the 'Mad Science' Group into school who will run 'Mineral Mania' workshops with our Year 3 learners. They will develop their knowledge of the rock cycle and learner how heat causes geological change.
All Year 4 parents are warmly invited to attend the 2019 Dragons' Den in the D2 Pod. Like the TV show, 'Dragons’ Den', the children will be sharing their ideas for potential businesses for the next Year 4 Market Day. The event will be a chance for you to ask questions and help the children clarify both their business idea but more importantly, their organisation.
More information regarding this event can be found in the email sent to you last week. We look forward to seeing you there!
Our learners have been given the massive challenge by the marketing department to create an advertising campaign for Nexus International School!
Our learners will present their initial ideas, chosen concept and final design to the marketing department and parents at the Advertising Fair. They will be expected to discuss and explain:
How their ideas evolved
The overall message and meaning through their concept/slogan
The audience they intend to reach
The final design and justification to the design elements
What platform it would be best suited to ( eg: a Youtube pre-roll or a website advert)
Come along and be find out more about Nexus from our learners perspective!
To support our 'Sharing The Planet' UOI, Year 2 learners will be venturing out to Singapore Zoo and Sungei Buloh. They will be looking at different habitats and making comparisons between natural and man-made habitats. How does the Zoo create different environments to meet the needs of the animals? Are these authentic? How could they be improved? We hope this will provoke them to develop their own lines of questioning about change within habitats.
To support our Unit of Inquiry ‘Communities Depend On Relationships’, we are organising a visit to the Singapore Repertory Theatre for all our Year 1 learners next week. The learners will be watching ‘Gretel and Hansel’ which explores family love, courage and sibling rivalry! This will help the learners to develop an understanding for empathy, respect and cooperation in relationships and reinforce our inquiries in class. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for the learners to experience a theatre production and a twist on a classic tale!
We have had a fantastic year of music-making with our Primary learners and a variety of performance opportunities have taken place. To bring this year to a close we are hosting a special Primary Music Ensembles Concert on Thursday, 23 May in the Nexus Auditorium at 5pm. The theme for our concert will be 'Popular Songs' and the learners have been busy preparing them since the start of our CCA season in January. Some pieces were performed at NexFest, however some will feature debut performances which are being specifically rehearsed as we write!
The concert will be a culmination and celebration of our Primary musicians hard work and dedication throughout the year. All of our Primary Music Ensembles will be performing; Singing Stars, Primary Choir, Primary Orchestra, Ukettes, Beginner Ukulele, Sing and Strum and Percussion Ensemble.
Please note this in your diaries as everyone is involved! Tickets will be available nearer to the time. Attendance at all rehearsals are essential for all learners.
We will be welcoming the International Schools' Theatre Association (ISTA) and numerous artists from across the globe to Nexus next week. . We are hosting the Singapore Festival for Lower Primary learners . We have numerous learners from Nexus joining the festival this year, exploring their creativity and demonstrating our hospitality.
