We are busily preparing for our annual Diversity Week, starting on Monday, 22 October - the first week back after the holiday!
This year our celebrations of diversity align with the International United Nations Day on Wednesday, 24 October. Our colourful national flags will be flown proudly around the school.
There will be a wide range of events including open stage performances throughout the week at lunchtime and cultural stalls and dress up activities on Friday, 26 October. As always, there will be a learning experience in classes to encourage all learners to reflect, share ideas and embrace diversity. In some Year Groups we are asking for your involvement, please see the details below. Please email your child's homeroom teacher directly to share how you would like to get involved.
The theme of the Free Dress Day on Friday, 26 October is 'Me, You, Us'. Families are encouraged to spend time in the holiday talking with their children about what diversity means to them and how they can show that in what they wear. On Friday there will also be a range of cultural stalls organised by our Secondary School learners. Children are invited to bring in a few of dollars to purchase a treat or two.
Nursery and Kindergarten
Parents or family members are invited to join us throughout the week to the Phase 1 'BOOK OR COOK'. You can either read a story from your home country, in your native language, or bake a simple traditional dish with children from your child's class. We would love as many families as possible to join us, so please do let us know asap if you would be interested and we can confirm a suitable time throughout the week.
Year 1
Parents or family members are invited to join us for a Story or Snack Session . You may join us during the week to read a story from your culture or home country or bring in a small snack to share with the class (please make sure that the snacks are nut-free). On Thursday, 25 we will have a Diversity Show and Tell. We ask all learners to bring in an item that represents them. This does not necessarily have to be connected to their home country but can represent what makes them happy, eg: a photo of a space they strongly connect to, a special toy or keepsake from a place they've lived or visited.
Year 3
Our fantastic Year 3 'Cultural Fair' is the following week - on Wednesday, 31 October - 1.40pm to 3.10pm. There will be many workshops for small groups of learners run by parents and staff. We do hope you'll take part. Pplease contact Year 3 team or complete this brief Google Form to let us know how you are going to join in.
Year 4
We invite parents in Year 4 who would like to celebrate Diversity Week, to 'perform' to the cohort of learners. This might entail reading a book from your culture such as a fable, old story or read a book in two languages. It could also be a poem or a small performance related to your home country’s culture. We are flexible with what you would like to share.
Year 5
The Year 5 learners will be creating a Cultural Museum with exhibits of artefacts and special items from their home countries or countries they have a special connection with. We ask that all learners bring in an interesting artefact from a place that is special to them.
Please email your child's homeroom teacher directly to share how you would like to get involved.
Shortly after the October holiday the Primary School will be celebrating Deepavali. We are asking all our Hindu parents to join us for the day to share some of their customs with the learners. If you would like to join us please contact Bhavana Nair (nair.b@nexus.edu.sg). We will be celebrating on Friday, 9 November and all children are invited to wear traditional Indian clothes for the day.
We are also asking our Indian families if they have any child-sized traditional outfits they would like to donate to the school for the learners to try on at our Deepavali Photobooth.
Save the date!
Join us for an informal evening to bring you up to date with the latest about our new school. We will be sharing in greater detail about the different learning and play areas, as well as unique parent spaces that the new campus will feature.
We look forward to seeing you there! Further details will follow.
