Year 3 Sembawang Residential Trip

Last week, Year 3 Learners headed off to ‘Camp Challenge’ in Sembawang for their first residential trip. Our learners took part in a programme of rock climbing, team games, raft building and a relay challenge as well as and group presentations around the campfire. Developing team building skills, independence, practical life skills, support for each other, perseverance with personal challenges and having lots of fun together were all part of the course.

Kindergarten Mini Exhibition

Our Kindergarten learners held their first Mini Exhibition of the year, sharing their understanding of how their senses enable them to learn about themselves and the environment. It was a very engaging and 'hands-on' event, which was well attended by our families. It was fantastic to see so many parents daring to put their hands into our 'Mystery Feely Boxes', making sweet jam sandwiches and creating 'Cup Telephones' with their children. We hope that you had fun!

Year 1 learners go in search of the Big Bad Wolf

Year 1 learners had a very exciting week last week when the Wolf came for a visit during their immersive learning of The Three Little Pigs. Throughout the week learners had opportunities to find clues to help with the 'investigation' which led to some wonderful writing. They also enjoyed creating whole class maps in their search for the Big Bad Wolf. On Friday there was a Wolf sighting in the Year 1 Learning Garden, which ended with him entering the classes where he was interviewed by the learners. The learners were very forgiving once they realised the Wolf was sorry for his actions, and Mr Beach came to take him away to reflect on his behaviour. Thank you to the Year 1 parents for supporting the learners in their excitement.

Kindergarten trip to Jacob Ballas

On Wednesday, Kindergarten learners culminated their Unit of Inquiry exploring human senses with a visit to the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden at the Botanical Gardens. Immense fun was had by all as we used our 5 senses to explore our surroundings. Delightful sights, smells and textures awaited us along the trails. We spotted brightly coloured birds and butterflies, smelled beautiful flowers and found different fruit in the Orchard.

Support 65 join Years 3 and 5 to talk about Restorative Practice

Year 3 and 5 learners were treated to class presentations on their understanding of Restorative Practice. These powerful presetnations were led by learners from the Secondary School named Support 65. Support 65 are a group of learners who have been trained in conflict resolution and help to support all our learners in as many different ways as they can.

They know that our school is about building and maintaining good relationships. They also know how to help repair them when they have gone wrong. We are really proud of our secondary learners for their time and energy in creating an environment for a shared understanding of our school's philosophy.

ACER ISA - Mathematical Literacy and Reading Assessments

Last week, over 50 randomly selected Year 4, 5, 6 and 7 learners participated in the ACER ISA assessments. The International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) is a high-quality assessment used by international schools to monitor student performance over time and to confirm that their internal assessments are aligned with international expectations of performance. In previous years our learners have performed significantly above the mean score for international schools globally. This is an excellent reflection of the standard of both our written and taught curriculum.

The ISA supports Nexus to compare themselves against other schools worldwide as part of our quality assurance processes. ACER has gained invaluable experience in developing assessments that are culturally and educationally appropriate for students from many language and educational backgrounds. The ISA is based on the internationally endorsed frameworks for the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

We look forward to sharing the main findings in January 2019 when the data is fully analysed against all the international schools that are part of this quality assurance programme.
