Our Nursery learners have been exploring Data Handling recently. They have been finding ways of collecting information about themselves and others. We began by asking questions about our favourite fruit, ice-cream flavours and the colour of our eyes. We used various ways of recording our results, including drawing pictures and symbols. We talked about using tally marks as another way of recording our responses and used lolly pop sticks first, before making our own tally marks on a graph. The children are now beginning to interpret the information that they have collected and we are using language such as most, least and popular to describe the results.
As part of our unit on plants, we have been making simple recipes. We talked about where the ingredients come from and were surprised at some of their origins. We used our senses to explore the various fruits and vegetables before putting our cooking skills to work. We have learnt basic skills such as cutting, mashing and peeling to create delicious dishes!
In Year 1 this week we have been investigating a crime! Two homes have been destroyed ( a straw and stick house) and now the learners have to take on an 'police investigator' role and solve the crime. We have been visited by 'detectives' who have shared clues about the incident. The learners have enthusiastically drawn maps to track the events and written hypotheses' around who may have committed the crime. This is a wonderful opportunity for the learners to problem solve as well as develop their writing skills.
The Year 2 learners have continued their exploration into light, looking at what can block light and what happens when light is blocked. Having looked at their shadows in the morning in the bus bay, they were perplexed and intrigued to find how different they were when they returned to the same spot in the afternoon! What had happened to cause such huge change? They were also hunting around our hub to examine different materials - which ones could block light? Which ones changed it in some way? We were impressed at how quickly they grasped the new vocabulary: transparent, translucent and opaque.
This week Year 3 learners have started their new Unit of Inquiry and have begun to explore the forces that change our natural environment. What is a 'landform'? How are mountains made? How were the oceans formed? What's inside our Planet Earth? Why are there different types of rocks? What makes an earthquake happen? These are all questions that have been raised by Year 3 learners this week. We have begun exploring some of these big questions through a rotation of workshops exploring plate tectonics, volcanic action, the rock cycle and the geological process of erosion.
As part of the unit exploring how we express ourselves through fashion, the Year 4 learners have embarked on a four week exploration using tools in woodwork, creating jewellery out of beads and learning how to sew and weave. Working in our fantastic new art spaces and Makerspaces, the learners will be creating unique designs to take away with them. Using the skills learned during these fun activities, the children might be able to apply these in the following Market Day unit scheduled for Term 4.
The awesome Year 5 learners have been inquiring into sleep as part of our Who We Are Unit. We have been exploring different forms of well-being where many learners wanted to understand more about their sleep (physical well-being), as many felt they were lacking in this area!
Learners formed questions they wanted to inquire into and have begun to present their research in interesting and creative ways.
Another great week for our learners as they have really stepped it up with their Maths, Language Arts and Literacy tasks. Home learning was also the best effort we have seen all year. We have been working hard on how to help the gibbons in our 'Mantel of the Expert Inquiry'. We have also been exploring Biomes to make connections with our wider environment. Next week we will begin constructing our very own Biomes. It will be very interesting to see what ourYear 6 engineers design.
