On Tuesday, our Nursery & Kindergarten learners and their families gathered together for a morning of festive fun. Beginning with a performance of Christmas songs from around the world, the children wowed us all with their creative hand-made costumes, sweet singing and awesome dance moves. After a fabulous rendition of 'We Wish you a Merry Christmas', it was time to get crafty in our classrooms, where the learners, Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Brothers & Sisters all enjoyed decorating cookies, designing cards, glueing tree decorations and moulding Rudolphs and snowmen from play dough. It really was a special morning, thank you for joining us.
Music ensembles from across the school have presented another wonderful Carols by Candlelight performance in the auditorium. Lots of fun and joyous songs were heard, and of course the audience joined in too. In addition, learners and parents shared their own family Christmas traditions as well as short stories related to the theme. This was particularly memorable as it was our last concert in the Ulu Pandan auditorium. We'll all miss our old space very much!
The Year 4 trip to Malacca has come and gone, but the many memories remain.
Starting out bright and early on Wednesday morning, the learners and teachers set off on a journey across the waters to Malacca, Malaysia. Stoping a few times along the way, we arrived at 12:30pm for a fantastic local lunch in the downtown area. Afterwards we split into groups. The afternoon was busy with traditional local games and a visit to Cheng Ho museum to learn about the great admiral himself. Dinner and some active games took us through till bedtime.
Awakening early for breakfast, we once again got back into our groups and set off for the day's activities. Batik painting, a river cruise and a visit to the Maritime museum had us busily moving around Malacca. Later in the evening, we concluded the day with a tasty dinner, and some quiet activities for those needing a moment, and for others that needed to burn off energy, more active games were offered. Lights were out at 8pm, and most eyes were closed by 8:01pm.
Up bright and early on Friday had everyone excited as the trip back to Singapore was close! We concluded the trip with outdoor games at the local botanical gardens and then it was in the bus for the journey back to home!
Now that we've returned to school, this will be an important time to share some of our learned knowledge in our Mini Exhibition on Tuesday next week.
Last Tuesday, Year 5 continued to develop their knowledge of matter when we visited the Science Centre. We explored the concept of change as we viewed demonstrations of how solids, liquids and gases can undergo physical and chemical changes. Learners were able to connect their prior knowledge to the experiments that they watched. We learnt how to freeze a banana in less than a minute, why a metal ball can move through a ring when it is cooled and that plasma is another state of matter. We returned to school with more questions about why things happen the way they do and what might cause these changes. Learners have the opportunity to further inquire into Science areas of interest, as they plan and present their investigation and new understandings to other learners this week.
Last Friday, 29 November 2019, the Nexus Primary Percussion Ensemble took to the stage and performed our very first piece together as a group - Coldplay - Viva La Vida. Pupils performed on various percussion instruments such as xylophones, the cajon drum, bongo drums, maracas, Boomwhackers and the drum kit.
We look forward to our next performance at our new school!
On Thursday, the Year 1 learners led a fantastic Mini Exhibition on Forces. They had lots of fun sharing their inquiries with parents and it was wonderful to see so many of our adults getting their hands messy! Highlights included parachute making, boat floating and pulling sleds. The learners were able to explain what forces were being used and they confidently used vocabulary such as friction, air resistance and gravity. Thank you to all the parents that came and enthusiastically engaged in all the activities with the learners. The Year 1 teachers were extremely proud of the learners and the confidence they displayed.
