Dear Parents and Caregivers
There has been much excitement this week as our Year 3 team have had the chance to take their learners out in small groups to do a walking tour of the local neighbourhood. The walk was part of their current UOI - How We Organise Ourselves, inquiring into the central idea of how 'systems connect communities'. The walk has left us optimistic that as the regulations are set to ease we will be able to facilitate further learning opportunities outside the classroom spaces.
As we continue with our sharing of the PYP framework this week I want to bring your attention to one of the frameworks key elements - Learner Agency. On the diagram below you can see Agency written on one of the central circles. The IB define learner agency as
“Agency is the power to take meaningful and intentional action, and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of the individual, supporting voice, choice and ownership…” IBO November 2017
Here at Nexus this means our learners are actively involved in their learning, making choices and taking actions. In this weeks News from the Year Groups we have focused on the different ways learners are able to take ownership of their learning - so please do take a look. In addition we will be running a Parent Workshop on 'Agency and Action in the Primary School' on Tuesday, 17 May. Please go to our 'Upcoming Events' page for further information.
On the theme of Learner Agency we have our Primary Learning Conferences coming up on the 3rd and 4th of March. Learning Conferences are formal sessions for parents led by the learners themselves. Our teachers will have guided and prepared your child for this experience. The emphasis is on the discussion between you and your child around their learning journey. During a conference the learner reflects on their learning in a range of areas. At Nexus we believe that learning is enhanced when a child reflects on his or her own learning processes.
Warm regards
