On Tuesday, Nexus celebrated Hari Raya Puasa in style! Hari Raya is the Muslim celebration to mark the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Many learners dressed in traditional Malay or Muslim clothes and we were treated to traditional music, dance, crafts, food and games throughout the day.
A huge thanks to all the staff and parents involved in this wonderful celebration!
WOW! What a finish to the House Cup events for the year! This annual team building event which acts as the introduction to the week of Year 6 Transition Days (to Secondary School) has become a real highlight in the calendar for our Year 6 & 7 learners. The weather tried to have its say but we moved the events inside and definitely did not let that dampen our spirits.
Each house had two teams representing them, made up of a mix of both Year 6 & 7 learners. There were many different challenges on offer. Some of the highlights were said to be the ‘Tent Tip’, and of course the ‘Fireman Flick’, although there was much fun and laughter had at all stations.
After the teams had battled it out on the stations, the final positions were decided by the much anticipated Tug o’ War. It was Angin (Yellow) and Api (Red) House who went through to the final which proved to be an absolute cracker! Congratulations must go to Angin House for taking top spot in this event, once all the results were in.
This made for a very exciting last run for a couple of houses who were in contention to lift the House Cup for this academic year. While everybody had a lot of fun along the way, there comes a time when we must acknowledge the winners of the House Cup for the 2018/19 academic year. Congratulations to TANAH (GREEN) HOUSE who have now claimed back to back cups for just the second time in our history. Good luck defending it next year. Those other houses are hot on your heels...

The Kindergarten learners enjoyed not one, but two trips last week as we culminated our learning about Journeys and how we explore Singapore and the world. On Tuesday, the children and their parents took the number 7 bus along to Clementi to visit the local shopping centre. Our intention was to buy bananas to hopefully tempt our missing monkey Scklarkey back to school. On Thursday, with our bananas at the ready, we travelled into Singapore and boarded the Singapore River Cruise boat at Clarke Quay. As we sailed along the river, we spotted many famous landmarks, including Marina Bay Sands and The Merlion. We kept our eyes peeled for our missing class monkey, and sure enough he appeared. There were squeals of delight when the learners saw him hanging out by the side of the river. When we returned to the shore we found a pile of banana peels and a handwritten note from our cheeky explorer.
Nursery enjoyed a fantastic visit to our local community nursing home last Friday. The experience is a very valuable one for our young learners and the connections that they have made with the residents throughout the year are wonderful. The children enthusiastically sang some of their favourite songs and then spent time colouring some Eid pictures with our friends. It was a lovely way to say goodbye to the residents and we know that they will look forward to a visit from our new Nursery class next year.
The final few days of Primary School were very exciting for our Year 6 learners.
Last week ,saw everyone enjoying a taste of Secondary School as they explored what Drama, Science, Humanities, Maths and English looks and feels like. Creating fireworks and their own Superheros were just some of the fun activities they enjoyed.
On Wednesday we had our Year 6 pool party along with a shared potluck lunch. In keeping with our unit 'How We Organise Ourselves', both activities were organised by the learners with support from their teachers and parents.
Thursday was a chance to formally say goodbye to all of the people who helped make the year such an outstanding success. It was also a time to acknowledge the teachers who were leaving who have had an impact they had on so many of our learners throughout the year.
Finally, Friday brought on many hugs as it hit everyone that their time in Primary School was actually over. For those who will join us again next year in Year 7, have a wonderful rest and don't forget to say hello to us in the Primary School.
For those who are moving forward onto other school. We wish you well and hope that you remember us fondly.
Year 5 learners enjoyed an action packed visit to the Science Centre on Thursday. We began with a movie viewing of 'Space Next'. This was the perfect ending to our UOI focus on 'Exploration of Earth in Space expands human understanding'. Learners made valuable connections to their inquiry learning and heard about the current research of scientists as they plan for future space exploration.
We had fun exploring the Kinetic Garden and Science Centre. This gave learners the opportunity to participate in many practical, hands on activities. To cool off and celebrate the end of a fantastic year, everyone enjoyed time to splash and run in the Water Park area.
A huge thank you for all those who have made donations through the sponsorship for the Climbathon. A total has not yet been counted as money is still coming in, but a current estimate is that around $6,500 has been raised. This is a fantastic amount and will make a huge difference to the lives of the young people supported by Chora Chori, Nepal. They have also communicated their thanks for the continued support. Watch this short video to hear their gratitude and what the money is going to go towards.
'The Power of the Shoe!' Year 3 learners have been thinking about how environment can shape lives. For some children and adults across the world, not owning a pair of shoes can result in foot injuries, parasites, foot rot and even not being allow to go to school.
Nexus learners have joined with 'Ten Feet Tall' and the global charity 'Soles 4 Souls' to collect unwanted, wearable shoes that will be distributed to families in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines who are in need. Nexus learners have donated HUNDREDS of pairs of shoes during the last week. Learners have included notes to the shoes' new owners! Each pair of shoes will make a huge difference to the lives of their new owner. Thank you for your kind donations.
Inspired by the sad news of Joseph in Year 10 who has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, our resourceful learners took it upon themselves to raise money to support cancer research. Organising a satellite shaving event at our very own Nexus campus, three barbers came to school to shave some 25 heads, both learners and staff. Including 3 very brave Primary School learners! This has been a particularly successful event with an astonishing amount raised thus far: over $16,000! If you would like to donate please head to here:
Well done to all concerned and thank you for taking such a brave step to support cancer research and Joseph.
