There was a great buzz of innovation in the Year 3 'Upcycling Workshop' last Thursday as 'trash’ was turned into ‘treasure’. Parents joined their children to create some fantastic upcycled items. A water bottle was turned into a bird feeder; an old pair of jeans became a groovy notebook cover; old socks became soft toys and old kettle became a lavender garden to name by a few. Through these hives of creativity, in D1 and D2 pods our Year 3 children were learning the importance of finding solutions to our ever growing problem of what to do with all our rubbish. This was just one aspect of our Unit of Inquiry in which learners are looking at local issues and considering the action they can take to make a positive difference to the world around them.
The Year 1 learners had a wonderful time at West Coast Park on Thursday morning. They played and explored as part of their research for designing their 'well being' play spaces, to summarise their Unit of Inquiry learning. They had the opportunity to reflect on the safety of the play equipment and how it made them feel. The learners even tapped into their imaginative play as they splashed in the muddy puddles created by the previous night's rain. This led to some interesting conversation about muddy play areas and 'quicksand'. Next week they will use their findings to plan and design their new well-being spaces and will even be consulting with the architects involved in the new Nexus site.
With over 80 participants signed up from the Nexus community, the enthusiasm and support for the Run for Hope was clear to see. Learners of all ages from Primary and Secondary, along with parents and staff, saw an early start on Sunday, 21 February as they turned up to support and run in this annual event. With some taking part in the 3.5km and some the 10km race, we were lucky that the rain held off! There was a great deal of determination and endurance evident as everyone pushed themselves to complete the course. A fun morning for a good cause! Well done to all those who took part.
