Our Nursery learners have been taking action as part of their Unit of Inquiry on living things and their needs. We have been finding out about how we can help living things to grow and stay healthy. As well as our class tadpoles, we have been caring for our much loved school chickens. This week we have visited them daily to ensure that they have enough grain to eat and clean water to drink. We also noticed that the grass at the bottom of their coop had died, so the children suggested that we move their home to a greener patch of grass. The chickens now seem much happier with fresh grass to peck!
We have been busy looking at the connections between living things in their environment. Did you know that we not only get food from plants, but other items as well? We found out that cotton comes from the cotton plant and leaf fiber can be woven into rope. We also tasted different types of tea made from plants, such as mint tea and chrysanthem tea. We also became inquirers in our immediate surroundings and went on a scavenger hunt for different flowers in the playground. We used our skills of making tally marks to record our findings and even found a few new plants that we haven't seen before.
Over the last two weeks the Year 1 learners have been immersed in the story of the Three Little Pigs. Our learners assumed their roles of 'Agents' solving the mystery of two destroyed houses. The agents have investigated crime scenes, created wanted posters and conducted interviews with a zoo keeper, wood cutter, train station master and the office cleaner trying to narrow down their search for the big bad wolf. Thanks to our agents' fantastic and deep thinking skills they were able to capture the wolf just as he was about to board the last train out of the city!
This week Year 2 learners have been reflecting on what we can and can't do without light. The learners had a number of challenges to face when blindfolded! They discovered that they could make playdoh creatures and attempt to write their names, but could not make creatures of specific colors or trace over specific letters. Reflecting on their experiences, everyone certainly appreciated how much easier everything was when their blindfolds came off!
During the last two weeks, Year 3 learners have continued their inquiries into the processes that form, and continue to change, landforms on our planet. Learners have been engaged in lots of practical activities to help build their knowledge and understanding of the causes and effect of the forces that shape our Earth. Learners have made their own play dough with which they have created the layers of the Earth. Groups have explored how heat in the mantel of the Earth causes the tectonic plates to move and volcanoes to erupt. Groups have found out about the 'Rock Cycle' and have learned how the power of water erodes rock carving out canyons.
Year 4 learners have been busy taking risks and exploring a range of new skills. They have been improving their woodwork, sewing, weaving and jewelry making skills this past month. This week wrapped up the final of the four-week sessions with multiple final products that have likely made their way home already. Take a look at the photos to see some of the terrific creations!
We have been tuning into our new UOI by learning about past and present change makers who promote awareness through their creative actions. Learners have been increasing their knowledge of persuasive features and deciding on a context for their own inquiry and action. Watch out, you just might be chosen as their elevator pitch audience or to feature in their pre roll advertisement!
This week we have been observing the changes in our Biomes. Some were successful, others not, all will give us an opportunity to learn and reflect. We also, after many weeks of developing our own idea, finally learnt the true story of The Gibbon Experience in Laos. We now move to actions we can take by firstly exploring our Carbon Footprint. Feel free to click on the site to calculate your own. You might be surprised with what you find!
