The Year 10 IGCSE Design Technology group has been having a blast exploring the Pewter Casting process. They began by designing a pendent —which could eventually become a keychain, a piece of jewellery or a hairpin—before carefully scribing their final designs onto a slip-cast mould. After successfully casting their pieces, students are now refining their work by cutting and filing away excess pewter to achieve a smooth finish. Some are using a power drill to create holes for metal rings, while others are enhancing their designs with accessories such as beads, ribbons, and metal chains, adding a unique touch to their final creations.
Y12 will be on study leave from Wednesday 12th March. During study leave, learners can study at home or they can come into school to work. They are welcome in the common room and there will be staff available to support them. It is important throughout their exams that they come into school in uniform and have their school ID.
Thursday 13th March - Group 4 Science Collaborative Project. This is a mandatory part of the IB Diploma. The task is aimed to develop learners critical thinking, problem solving, reflecting and collaborative skills. It is not a graded task so learners do not need to prepare for it or worry about it. They just need to come along and be engaged!
Friday 14th March - our learners who do an Arts portfolio subject (Music, Theatre, Visual Arts) will be in school working on portfolio tasks. Learners who do not do these subjects can be revising at home or in school.
Monday 17th to Friday 21st March are the Y12 exams. Learners need to only come in for their exams. Exam timetable is attached here. Please encourage your child to get into school on time for their exams and bring in the correct equipment. It is essential that they bring their scientific calculators in for their Maths and Science exams as we do not have sufficient to loan out. EAL learners are also encouraged to bring a translation dictionary for exams.
If learners are sick during exams we can only reschedule the exam to another day if we are provided with a Medical Certificate that states they were too unwell to complete the exam. Learners will get their results at the start of Term 4. The Y12 exams are important and they are a useful way of us determining which learners may need further support but please note that university predicted grades are not based solely on these exam results. Predicted grades will be produced at the start of Y13 and they are based on all the work the learners have done - classwork, assessments, tests, Y12 exams, Internal Assessments completed.
If after the exams your child feels that they seriously struggled with focus, attention and/or anxiety, please do contact the IB Diploma team to see what support can be provided.
Monday 7th April - Extended Essay Day. On the first day back in Term 4, learners will be working on their Extended Essays (EEs). The EE is a compulsory part of the IB Diploma and learners will be given guidance on this day about research methods, referencing, structuring etc. Please note, your child should be working on their EE over the March/April two week holiday.
We will be holding a parent workshop on "Understanding the Extended Essay" on Tuesday 18th March. You can find more details and RSVP below.
In Term 4, our Y12 learners will start Internal Assessments in many of their IBDP subjects. The Internal Assessments are worth between 20-25% of their final mark so it is really important that they are completed to a high standard. They will also complete their Theory of Knowledge Exhibition. We will keep you informed if learners fall behind on these pieces of work and would appreciate your support in getting learners to complete them to their full potential.
The Learner Council recently met with the Principal, Mr. Mann, and the Head of Operations, Ms. Gazel, to discuss feedback on the school’s cafeteria provider, Compass. Representing the voices of almost 300 learners from a secondary school-wide survey, the council presented key concerns regarding food, service, and overall dining experience over the past year and a half. This meeting was an important step in ensuring learner perspectives are heard. In the coming weeks, the Learner Council President, Kaspar and Secretary Ryan, along with selected representatives, will present their findings directly to the Head Manager of Compass to advocate for meaningful improvements.
