Reflections on Tioman by Yr7
Our Year 7 learners recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Tioman Island, packed with adventure, teamwork, and personal growth. It was a week full of challenges, triumphs, and memories that will last a lifetime.
From the very start, the trip was all about building connections and developing relationships. Learners supported one another, laughed together, and forged friendships that will strengthen our Year 7 community for years to come. Demonstrating the IB learner profile trait of being caring and the RECIPE value of respect, they consistently supported each other and created an enjoyable environment for everyone.
Ms. Karianne shared, “It was so heartwarming to see learners looking out for one another, especially when someone was feeling homesick. They took turns comforting and caring for their peers, showing incredible kindness and maturity. Watching them grow into genuinely lovely little humans filled me with pride.”
Exploring the vibrant coral reefs, learners demonstrated their inquirers spirit as they marvelled at parrotfish, turtles, a majestic giant stingray, and even found Nemo! Their enthusiasm was palpable as they reflected on what they had learned about the importance of respecting ecosystems. Learners will continue to apply this knowledge in their 'Fragile World' MYP Unit in I&S this term.
Inspired by their talk on coral restoration and harvesting, some learners even experimented with creating their own coral harvesting techniques using washed-up items they found on the beach—a true sign of an IB learner, applying knowledge in a real-world context.
Mr. Paul remarked, “Watching the learners’ faces light up as they discovered the underwater world was a highlight of the trip. Seeing them apply their knowledge in such a meaningful way was incredible—what could be more amazing?”
A thrilling bouldering expedition and a challenging jungle hike tested our learners' risk-taking and balanced approach to problem-solving and resilience. They respected the environment while cheering each other on, keeping spirits high, and even witnessed an unforgettable wildlife moment: a snake enjoying a lizard for lunch!
Ms. Elise remarked, “I was so proud of the learners’ perseverance—they never gave up, even on the steepest climbs. They truly embodied the RECIPE values of respect , passion and excellence.”
Learners took to the waves in sea kayaks, where capsizing competitions and racing became instant favourites. Laughter echoed across the water as teams collaborated, showing their communication and collaboration skills. Their respect for one another's ideas and efforts made every activity more enjoyable.
Mr. Luke and Mr. Ronan reflected, “Their creativity, joy and athleticism during the kayaking races reminded us how adventurous and fearless they are. They pushed themselves and encouraged each other to excel.”
Another highlight was building and testing rafts to withstand a sea adventure. Learners worked together, combining thinkers and inquirers skills to design the perfect raft. Their respect for one another's contributions, resilience, and creativity shone as they experimented, learned from failures, and celebrated successes together.
Mr. Dev commented, “It was amazing to see the learners problem-solving together, using their knowledge to create rafts that didn’t just float—they thrived!”
Ms. Jessica added, “Watching them collaborate, think critically, and bond during the raft-building was so rewarding and a great demonstration of the Nexus RECIPE values.”
Cooking dinner over a campfire and sneaking in a midnight chat after lights-out were moments that brought the group closer. One especially heartwarming moment was hearing learners take turns telling each other bedtime stories inside their tents, recreating routines from home to feel safe and secure. This act of being caring and open-minded was a testament to the strong bonds formed during the trip.
Mr. Tom and Ms. Katie reminisced, “At home, children go to bed with a story, and here, they created that for each other. We could hear them sharing stories in soft voices and didn’t have the heart to ask them to go to sleep. It was a beautiful moment of connection and comfort.”
The final night’s talent show, hosted at Coco House, was a spectacular celebration of creativity, bravery, and teamwork. Learners performed and showcased their talents, with the audience offering rapturous applause and encouragement, especially to those stepping out of their comfort zones. Their risk-taking was evident as they embraced this opportunity to shine.
Ms. Shabrina reflected, “It was incredible to see the learners supporting and cheering for one another, highlighting the closeness of their experience. Their performances will remain unforgettable memories.”
It was inspiring to see our Foundation English Programme learners integrate so seamlessly with their new tutor groups. They pushed their personal boundaries and demonstrated incredible open-mindedness and resilience, achieving more than they ever thought possible.
Ms. Kim shared, “It was wonderful to see these learners stepping out of their comfort zones and being embraced so warmly by their peers. They truly showed the IB values of respect and excellence.”
Throughout the trip, learners consistently gave their best, tried new things, and pushed themselves to be the best versions of themselves. They demonstrated courage, integrity, and a commitment to respecting both themselves and others.
Ms. Aisha remarked, “I was so proud to see each learner embracing challenges, giving their all, and growing so much in just a few days. Their passion for learning and commitment to trying their best was inspiring.”
Our learners rose to every challenge with enthusiasm and with great big smiles. They faced every adventure with a “no-nonsense” attitude, showing resilience and joy in the face of personal challenge. Ms. Sarah summed it up by concluding:
“Seeing the smiles, determination, and teamwork of our learners made me incredibly proud. They truly embraced the adventure, and it was a pleasure to witness their growth as principled and caring individuals.”
A huge thank you to the learners, teachers, and parents for making this trip such a success. It was a super epic adventure that will be remembered for years to come!

LEGALLY BLONDE
NOV 26,27,28 @6PM
‘Omigod You Guys!’ Welcome to Harvard Law School and the world of Elle Woods.
NEXUS Secondary school is so excited to be bringing you this very Pink production of LEGALLY BLONDE!
Legally Blonde: The Musical tells the story of Elle Woods, a lively, fashion-forward sorority girl who faces unexpected challenges as she follows her heart to Harvard Law School. After her boyfriend, Warner, ends their relationship to find someone "more serious," Elle decides to win him back by proving she's just as serious. Against all odds, she gets into Harvard, where she quickly realises that law school isn’t just about books and rules—it’s about finding out who you really are.
We were incredibly lucky this year that we had the opportunity to fly in Broadway star and choreographer, Nikki Snelson (centre), who played the original role of Brooke Wyndham in the Broadway version of Legally Blonde. She spent 10 days with our cast directing, choreographing and talking to them about her experiences and insights in the musical theatre industry. The result is an incredible choreography and a cast that is inspired and excited to showcase their talents to you.
This show has a slightly more mature feel to it, and does include some mild language and references to sexuality, so viewer discretion is advised for our younger audiences. Our cast, staff and tech crew have worked incredibly hard over the past three months to bring this story of friendship, resilience, and fun to life for you. We hope this performance leaves you positive, inspired, and maybe even feeling a little “Legally Blonde” yourself.
See you at Harvard!
Nexus Learner Council Leads the Way in Breaking Period Stigma During CARE:SELF Week
The Secondary Learner Council has taken a bold step toward fostering a culture of openness and empathy by breaking the stigma around periods. Building on last year’s impactful collaboration with the feminine hygiene company Blood, the Learner Council has worked tirelessly to create a safe space for honest conversations about menstrual health.
These efforts are a powerful example of learner-led action, inspiring our community to celebrate diversity and support one another with compassion.
We are incredibly proud of the Learner Council for driving this initiative and demonstrating how leadership and empathy can spark meaningful change.
Reports
Basic data reports can be seen for Y10 and above in the iSAMS parent portal. This is a temporary fix as we work in house and with iSAMS to develop these into the usual more detailed format. We apologise that there is a production delay around this.
Engagement grade
The engagement grade is intended to show how your child engages with their learning. What is indicated here could be a useful starting point for discussions with your child as they reflect on their attitude to learning. A positive attitude towards learning will often lead to greater academic progress. However, it is worth noting that high levels of effort do not guarantee the top levels of achievement but give your child the best opportunity to reach their potential.

Learners hoping to study the IBDP should aim to achieve a minimum of 5 "good" passes at IGCSE. For some IBDP Higher Level subjects, we require a higher IGCSE grade
