After the success of our first World Mathematics Competitions last year, Nexus had the honour of hosting this year’s Junior and Primary regional qualifiers on Saturday 16th November. We faced stiff competition from learners at UWC Dover and East, as well as NLCS. 30 learners from Nexus Primary and Secondary spent their Saturday doing maths, watched over by their very proud teachers!
This time, three of our Primary learners and two Secondary learners made it to the Codebreaker finals out of 45 learners at each level. Not only that, Nexus took 22 medals altogether, which was our best result so far!
Three learners won Golden Tickets to the finals in Melbourne in December. Congratulations to Divyansh Ghosh, Nicole Xu and Julian Dizon for this amazing accomplishment.
Huge thanks to all the Year 12 and 13 learners, as well as Nexus teachers, who gave up their time to make this a success for Nexus Mathematics.
15 Nexus learners took their love of mathematics to a higher level this November 14th, by participating in the University of Waterloo’s senior and intermediate mathematics contests.
These contests test lateral and creative mathematical thinking over 2 hours. Our learners are to be commended for their enthusiasm, as well as their resilience. The questions are not easy!
Many thanks to all who participated.
Please look out for more competitions we will be offering through the Learner Bulletin.
It was a spectacular music of 'Elton John' classics hosted by the Secondary Music Department. An eclectic mix of well known songs performed by the Jazz/Pop Ensemble, Secondary Choir, Chamber Strings, Chamber Choir, Secondary Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble and the wonderful singing Y7's. The audience certainly were 'still standing' by the end of the concert!
Thank you to all the performers for their on-going dedication to Music@NEXUS. The numerous hours of practise and rehearsals paid off and you were fantastic.
Music at the Eco Café is back on Friday mornings. The Y12 IBDP Musicians welcomed our community to school this morning with their IBDP performances. It was a lovely way to start the day. Thank you to those of you who stopped by to listen and be serenaded!
SHOPPING - LUNCH - CHRISTMAS PERFORMACES - NEXUS!
If you happen to be in the 'hood' of Tanglin Mall on Sunday 8 December at 12pm, combine some Christmas shopping with an opportunity to listen to our incredible Chamber Choir voices serenade everyone as part of their HO HO HO-LIDAY Shows.
Just beforehand is 'Jingle Joe's Puppet Show' for the little ones, so it promises to be a lovely day out for all the family.
A big congratulations goes to nine of our Primary learners who participated in the UK Primary Mathematics Challenge CCA in Season 1. They persevered with the problem solving that was required and we had some really interesting mathematical conversations along the way. The learners sat the official competition paper on 11th November and achieved these results:

What is the Primary Mathematics Challenge?
Created by The Mathematical Association (UK), the Primary Mathematics Challenge (PMC) is aimed at learners in primary schools, aged 9 - 11 years old. It is open to schools worldwide. The PMC is designed to encourage enthusiasm, boost confidence in mathematics and show the different ways questions can be asked. The focus is on problem solving as a means of helping learners develop their reasoning skills.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Wear it Pink day which was organised by the learner led group @breastgift. It was wonderful to see the sea of pink throughout the day. Many learners also supported by cooking delicious treats for the bake sale and they were enjoyed by the community whilst raising valuable funds for this great cause.
It was also wonderful to see learners challenging themselves to take part in the Run For Hope on Sunday, 17th November. Congratulations to everyone who took part and helped to raise awareness and funds. They raised almost $800 to donate to the Singapore Cancer charity.
All Year 9 learners officially kicked off their MYP Community Project journey on Monday. They took part in an inspiring reflection of their recent service trip to Loola. This process provided the learners with an opportunity to share valuable insights and thoughts into the importance of our role in supporting communities. It also laid the foundation for developing the Community Project group essential agreements. These will help to support each group through the project.
A key focus is ensuring that every group member's individual interests, skills, and talents are recognized and put to use, fostering a sense of collaboration and shared purpose. With a strong commitment to both personal growth and community impact, students are enthusiastic about the journey ahead.
The Community Project will span the rest of the Year 9 academic year, culminating in a final presentation and assessment during Term 4. As learners embark on this exciting endeavour, look forward to further updates on their project ideas that they will bring to life. The possibilities are endless, and we can’t wait to see the positive changes these young leaders will create!
After volunteering at Willing Hearts, a group of our CAS learners are running a food drive initiative. The food collected will help to support those in the Singapore community who are not able to access 3 meals a day.
Please help by brining in any sealed, packaged food with at least a 1 month expiry date. Halal food is preferred.
Thank you in advance for your support.
