On Wednesday 5 March, we celebrated our talented young musicians from across the school as they took to the stage to compete in our annual Young Musician of the Year Competition. With over 120 entries, the 40 learners who performed live to a judge were already winners in our eyes by making it to the finals.
We invited the Director of Performance, Hannah Baldwin, from NLCS Singapore to judge this year's competition. Hannah is a cellist, flautist and pianist with nearly 20 years' experience in teaching and leading at international schools in Singapore, China, Brazil and Italy. The Nexus music department were certainly relieved that they didn't have to judge as the competition was so tough!
A huge congratulations to all our winners:

Our recent Book Week was a resounding success! This year's theme was "It Begins With a Thought" and the week was a celebration of reading, author presentations and cultural appreciation through storytelling. Book Week was filled with activities that ignited our learners' passion for reading and it was a joy to see the creativity and imagination of the learners really come alive throughout the week.
Some highlights of the week:
⭐ Book Character Dress-Up Day: Learners and teachers transformed into beloved literary characters, bringing stories to life with their imaginative costumes.
⭐ Author Visits: We were honoured to host local and international authors in the Primary and Secondary school, inspiring many to embark on their own storytelling journeys.
⭐ Parent-led Storytelling: This truly was a highlight for many of our learners who attended. The atmosphere was festive and the children absolutely loved hearing our parents favourite stories, told in a variety of languages.
⭐ Buddy Reading: The week wrapped up with our Secondary and Primary learners teaming up to share their favourite stories.
Thank you to all who participated and supported these events. Your enthusiasm helps foster a lifelong love of reading in our learners.
It's been a week filled with laughter, camaraderie, and displays of teamwork and sportsmanship from all our learners. The energy has been infectious as our learners, divided into their houses, competed with enthusiasm and a real sense of unity. Every participant gave their best, and we were immensely proud to witness the support and encouragement they showed each other.
We loved seeing the sheer joy and excitement on every learner's face as they participated in the various activities. From the youngest learners in Early Years to Year 2, who gleefully navigated the parachute, balanced eggs on spoons, hopped in sack races, and aimed for targets, the smiles were contagious. Our Year 3 and 4 learners showcased their athletic prowess in the track and field events, demonstrating their dedication and determination. Year 5 and 6 brought their competitive spirit to the hula hut knockdown and the thrilling tug-of-war, where teamwork and strategic thinking were on full display. Our secondary learners also had a fantastic time, engaging in a variety of spirited invasion games, fitness, relays and the ever-popular 'Wet and Wild' activities, creating memorable moments and fostering a strong sense of community.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the parents who came and supported the event. We hope your children created some wonderful memories, and we look forward to future events.
And that's a wrap!
Last week, our Year 5 and 6 learners truly brought the high seas to life with their electrifying performance of ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean.’ It was a truly memorable adventure, filled with laughter, vibrant music, and daring escapades that captivated the entire audience. The energy in the auditorium was palpable, a testament to the months of dedicated rehearsals and hard work invested by each learner.
Beyond the spectacular performance itself, the production served as a powerful platform for personal growth and development. Learners forged lasting friendships, creating bonds and memories that will undoubtedly extend beyond their time at school. They not only showcased their diverse talents in dance, singing, and acting, but also demonstrated courage and resilience by embracing the challenge of embodying their characters. By stepping outside their comfort zones, they truly embodied the Nexus spirit of being a a risk-taker.
The radiant smiles and enthusiastic requests for an encore as the final curtain fell were a clear indication of the show's resounding success. It was a moment that underscored the immense value of their collaborative spirit and unwavering dedication. They displayed the attributes of caring and communicators by working together harmoniously, and were balanced and principled by seeing their hard work through to the end. The sense of accomplishment and shared joy made every moment worthwhile, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.
Congratulations to our 12 IB Artists who put on an inspiring exhibition to showcase two years of creative hard work. The range of media used and the personal journeys that they shared through their work was a pleasure to see.
The IB musicians also performed at the event, showcasing the creative talents of our current Year 13 learners.
The exhibition will remain in the L2 Atrium until the end of the day on 20 March, so please feel free to visit during the week when you are in school.
Well done to all those who were involved.
Congratulations to the whole cast of Blue Stockings on an amazing performance of our Senior Play, Blue Stockings! We are so proud of each and every one of your for the dedication and talent shown on stage.
Well done to all those that performed in our first Annual Performer of the Year competition. Congratulations to Alannah King (Yr11) as our Drama winner and Lisa Zhao (Yr13) as our Dance winner!
We had a very successful evening full of group scripted examination performances. We are very proud of all of our Year 11 Drama learners.
Solo theatre performance exams have been excellent, showcasing all the hard work Year 13 learners have put in over the past 2 years of their IBDP course. We wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours!
The Y12 IBDP musicians had the opportunity to attend a workshop in Electronic Music, hosted at SJII and in collaboration with Chris Koelma and Musical Futures. The 2-day event allowed for hands-on practical experience in performing and creating music through electronics. This is a large part of the IBDP music coursework and it was great to participate in workshops by professional electronic musicians, utilising new and innovative electronic equipment. The learners, alongside SJII and Dulwich IBDP learners, formed an electronic orchestra using synth pads, utilised guitar loop pedals and adapted them to vocals and even a cello. They created their own samples and worked collaboratively to put together a composition and performance.
