Please note that learning conferences will be held on Thursday 23rd September from 4pm to 8pm and all day Friday 24th September. This is the opportunity to meet your child's teachers to discuss learning and engagement. Learners are expected to attend these with their parents / guardians. We had hoped that we could run these face to face on campus, however it does not seem that this will be possible under the current safe management measures. Please note school will be closed on the Friday to enable staff to meet individual learners and families online.
For Secondary Learners with multiple subject teachers It is not essential to see every subject teacher this time. There will be a second Learning Conference during March 3rd and 4th.
Appointments will be made through Engage and you will be emailed when the booking system opens.
Dear Parents and Guardians
Here is some important information about PHE from Mrs. Martin, the new Secondary Learning Area Leader for Physical and Health Education (PHE).
The PHE Learner Expectations explain the essential agreement we shared with all of the learners at the start of the academic year. Please note that due to COVID restrictions, learners are unable to use the changing rooms (except for swimming) so they need to wear suitable running shoes (not skate shoes) and their Nexus PHE uniform for each day that they have a PHE lesson.
All learners in Year 7-10 (not Year 11) will participate in at least one unit in the swimming pool. The PHE Rotations (subject to change due to COVID-19) show what activities the learners will take part in and when.
The following classes will be first in the swimming pool from 30th August to 24th September:
7B, 7R, 8B, 8R, 9B, 10 PHE 4
For lessons in the swimming pool, learners must wear suitable swimwear, googles and swim caps (for long hair).
Please email martin.k@nexus.edu.sg if you have any questions.
Please make sure your child's token has a working battery and is easy to access as they come into school. Scanning QR codes on tokens without working batteries and unpacking bags to find tokens is slowing check in down. A token with a working battery should flash a light every minute. Please help us to help your child start the day promptly. Replacement tokens can be collected from local community centres.
To keep up with the ever-changing and digitally advancing world we as a school have moved away from the Hub and have instead opted for Canvas as our learning management system.
We have opted for Canvas because of the myriad of features it offers in ensuring that all our learners have access to the best of EdTech. Canvas not only provides our learners with a simple and coherent place to access and interact with educational content, it will also provide you with a window into their learning. Canvas has been trialled and tested by 30 million users around the world. Ranging from primary schools all the way to Ivy League universities like Princeton and Harvard.
Furthermore, Canvas offers you access to view how your child is doing in every class and assignment they are part of at a quick glance. With this live reporting, we are hoping to provide you with a much closer look at your child's learning journey in our school. With the communication features offered by this software, we hope it will bring our community closer in these disparate times.
This significant shift in how technology is used as part of education will be rolled out in September. This late role out is to ensure that the different elements of canvas can sync seamlessly causing minimal disruptions. As with any new technology, there will be teething issues and we request your patience to help ensure we can provide the best education for your child.
Regulations for households regarding Quarantine Orders and Stay At Home Notices
For the purpose of these regulations ‘household’ refers to all people residing at the same residence.
If any member of a household is isolating at home having been issued a quarantine order then all members of the household must stay away from school for the duration of the quarantine order.
In many cases, members of the household will be issued with a stay at home notice, however household members must stay away from school even if this has not been issued, for the duration of the quarantine order.
If the member of the household issued with the quarantine order is removed to a separate facility (it is not enough to be self-isolating in the same residence), the remaining members of the household must stay away from school for either:
seven calendar days
until end of the quarantine order
until the person issued with the quarantine order receives a negative covid test (this is usually done upon arriving at the quarantine facility)
The day before they are due to return to school household members need to complete an Antigen Rapid Test (ART). Once completed, take a photo of the test alongside photo ID of the person it was performed on, and send this to learner services. Or alternatively if you have PCR results sent via SMS, please send a screenshot of the SMS.
The ART is widely available from pharmacies and supermarkets, and takes around 20 minutes to receive a result from - it is also worth noting it is not too invasive for children.
If your child is experiencing any flu or cold symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, runny nose etc it is important you keep them away from school and seek advice from a doctor.
Thank you for helping us to keep our community safe during this tricky time.
Due to the change in Covid 19 restrictions at the end of last year, as you are aware, we were unable to hand out our yearbooks to all of our learners. Some of you picked them up from the school during the final week of term and over the summer but the majority of our Nexus families still don't have their copy. To solve this we are going to make them available to pick up from Learner Services over the next few weeks, so just pop in or send your child in to the office to pick up your copies.
If you would like your copy to come home with you child then please contact learner services and we will make sure they are delivered to your child's class so they can bring it home.
At the end of the last school year we had collected a large amount of lost and found items.
Due to the restrictions in place at the time, we could not display the items as we usually do at the end of each semester, hence we had to wait until the school reopening.
From Monday 23rd August lunchtime:
Water bottles, caps, uniforms, clothes, swim bags, and similar items will be displayed on the level 2 walkway, near the Grand Staircase just outside the Aquatics Gym.
The items will be on display for 2 weeks.
Valuable items (EZ link cards, air pods, jewelry, watches, glasses, calculators, keyboards, to name just a few!) will be kept safe at Learner Services, so if you think your child/ward has lost one of these items please email us at learnerservices@nexus.edu.sg or ask your child/ward to come and take a look.
We hope we can reunite as many items as possible with their rightful owners!
Please note that we will donate to charity anything that hasn’t been claimed at the end of the two weeks.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Warm regards,
Learner Services
We will be setting up and sharing the informal Parent WhatsApp Groups for this academic year very soon. In Primary, these will be Homeroom-based and in Secondary they will be Year Group based.
We are a school that prides itself on our strong community relationships and we know that families appreciate an informal channel to connect with the families of other learners in their child's class. These groups can be used to organise children's play dates, occasional reminders, arrange a social event for parents, etc.
We are still missing a few volunteers to run the chat for some classes. If you are interested, please do get in touch by emailing learnerservices@nexus.edu.sg
