Jazz Workshop (833) (Semester Course) 9-12
Jazz/Rock Workshop is open to all instrumentalists (We welcome flute, oboe, horn, bassoon, cello, and more!) who wish to learn about the various aspects of jazz music. This course will explore the essential concepts of jazz and is especially valuable for anyone who wants to be part of the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Workshop curriculum is aimed at familiarizing students with the various styles and concepts encompassed within the jazz genre. Learning about jazz improvisation, jazz theory and jazz history will be the focal point of the Jazz Workshop. The Jazz Workshop will include both classroom and performance-based learning. Students may perform at concerts or within the community. Open to students in grades 9-12.
Honors Jazz Ensemble (811) (Full Year Course) 9-12
Honors Jazz Ensemble eligibility for 9th Graders is considered on an as needed basis and per instruments we need to complete the jazz ensemble instrumentation. If you are interested in jazz at North you should plan on selecting Jazz Workshop during your course selection. However, if you would like be considered for Honors Jazz Ensemble please talk to your current jazz band teacher.

The Jazz Workshop provides an opportunity for students to learn about and perform in the jazz idiom. Both Jazz Workshop and Honors Jazz Ensemble incorporate learning about swing, latin, and funk styles as well as exploring the art of improvisation which is a cornerstone of the jazz experience. Newton North has a highly acclaimed jazz program regularly that interacts with world class artists. If you are interested in pursuing jazz at North then Jazz Workshop is the place to be in 9th Grade! - Mr. Labedz
