What is idling?
It is when you leave your car running while the car is parked. It can happen when you stop to drop someone off or wait to pick someone up. Or when you are stuck in traffic.
Why we shouldn't idle:
It's bad for the environment. Idling cars and buses emit more carbon dioxide than cars that are moving.
It's bad for our health. Idling produces smog, which can worsen asthma and heart and lung diseases. It is especially bad for young people.
It's bad for your car. It can damage the engine's cylinders, spark plugs and exhaust systems. It can also shorten the life of the battery.
It's illegal. In Massachusetts, it is illegal to let your car run for more than 5 minutes while it is parked. You might get a ticket if you are idling, especially if you are near a school where it impacts the children.
