During school closures over 2020, the Mental Health team has shared various social-emotional learning (SEL) resources within the teacher's weekly plans that were emailed. We have also made those resources available below for ongoing use.
These resources span four various, yet interconnected, domains of SEL:
A few years ago, teachers and students came together to identify core values for the Burr community. They arrived at: respect, teamwork, perseverance, and compassion. These values are taught to Burr students starting in kindergarten and continuing through their time at Burr.
Above is Carol Dweck. As an author, Dweck writes about the power of growth mindset. Listen to this 9-minute TED talk for a quick understanding of this idea, central to how we teach at Burr. Once you're aware of it, it becomes easier to incorporate into regular conversation!
A large part of social-emotional learning for children involves growing more self-aware. This includes skills like being able to identify feelings and recognizing how one's body feels in the moment. The Zones of Regulation curriculum is one that we pull from; it helps young students to become more aware of their bodies and their energy levels.
Mindfulness is being present and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Drawing from curriculum such as Mind Up, students learn about the neuroscience behind mindfulness while practicing mindful strategies that can be practiced both at school and at home.
We have posted activities for your children within each of these topics. Hover your cursor over "At-Home Resources" at the top right of the page. There are linked pages for these four topics.
