For the 2021-2022 school year all students in grades 1-12 receive 1:1 devices from the Newton Public Schools, and students in kindergarten have access to shared iPads in their classrooms. Students in grades 1 and 2 receive iPads, students in grades 3-8 receive Chromebooks, and students in grades 9-12 receive touchscreen Chromebooks.
If there any concerns regarding a student's ability to physically access a device, the student's case manager should reach out to the AT Specialist.
If there are concerns regarding a student's ability to visually access the device, please contact a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments.
To determine if the student will be able to physically access a touchscreen the AT Specialist uses parts of the McGinnity iPad Assessment Checklist. Questions include:
Can the individual isolate pointer finger?
Can the individual use the appropriate pressure to activate the screen?
Can the individual hold the device?
Can the individual scroll on the device?
Can the individual pinch?
If you answer no to several of these questions, please submit the AT Referral Form to request a consultation with the AT Specialist.
