About

Assessment vs. Consultation

The goal of any assistive technology assessment or consultation is to determine what is educationally needed for a student to make effective progress as part of FAPE, and for them to be able to access the curriculum and their environment. Assistive technology must be considered in conjunction with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan and, when recommended, must support the student's IEP goals and objectives or the 504 plan.

Please keep in mind there is no standardized testing for assistive technology and consideration is an ongoing and collaborative process.

Consultation

An AT consult is a brainstorming session between the AT Specialist, school team members and/or parents via phone, email, in person or video conference to discuss the areas of concern and identify possible supports that may work to help the student access the curriculum or environment.

A consultation allows for more immediate recommendations and implementation. After the consultation, the team will be provided with a one or two page written summary with any recommendations.

Educators should use the AT Referral Form when requesting a consultation.

Assessment

An AT assessment is typically reserved for students with significant needs (physical disabilities, hearing/vision impairments) who may need additional time to explore technology options. Educators and families should contact the AT Specialist before requesting an AT assessment.
