Each year the fifth grade chooses an organization they would most like to help as a part of our graduation social action project. We research charities and organizations that we are interested in and came up with the list below. Then we split up into groups and write persuasive essays, skits, songs, or multimedia presentations and present them to our peers. As a grade we then vote for the organization that we will help for the rest of the school year. Below are some organizations we could choose from. The Newton Food Pantry collects nutritious food by donation and feeds needy families from Newton.

Our mission is simple: To bring birthday parties to homeless children. Birthday Wishes recognizes the importance of a birthday in a child's life and believes that the gift of a birthday celebration provides normalcy, joy and hope in these children's otherwise unsettled lives.

Did you know children are the largest age group living in poverty in the United States? How does Catie's Closet help students? Catie's Closet provides clothes, toiletries, and essential items for students to be able to come to school ready to learn.

Our mission is to provide, free of charge, low-income and homeless children from birth to pre-teen the basic essentials they need to be safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. We also set a foundation for lasting change through the meaningful, tangible volunteer opportunities we provide to thousands of youth and adults each year.

We help children learn how to play, to share, to read, and to enjoy exploring their worlds. We help parents learn how to be nurturing and involved in the growth and development of their children, and help them learn and grow through job training, GED and college courses. We help to stabilize families so that they can weather any crisis, and thus help to break the cycle of homelessness that too often occurs.

Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors, and entire communities.

Malala Fund wants to see a world where every girl can complete 12 years of safe, quality education. We advocate — at local, national and international levels — for resources and policy changes needed to ensure all girls complete 12 years of school.
Partners in Health http://www.pih.org/
(PIH) has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. We urgently need your support to help those affected by the recent earthquake. PIH works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in 12 countries around the world. The work of PIH has three goals: to care for our patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world. Based in Boston, PIH employs more than 11,000 people worldwide, including doctors, nurses and community health workers. The vast majority of PIH staff are local nationals based in the communities we serve.

The Second Step, a private non-profit agency, seeks to break the cycle of domestic violence, one family at a time. We provide services to women and their children that enable them to remain free from abusive relationships and lead productive lives. Our mission is to provide transitional housing and support services to women and their children who have successfully taken the first step away from domestic violence. We provide a broad range of services to empower these women to heal, to maintain independence, and to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
