NPMS Climate Club
by Seraphina Drew
The NPMS Climate Club is a club that meets weekly in room 31 on Wednesdays after school. The club was created after a group of students were asking teachers to be an advisor for an environment-based club during the 2020-2021 school year. Due to issues with the pandemic and COVID-19, the club couldn’t properly start their first project until the end of that school year. Their first project was to help create the garden in front of the New Paltz community center on route 32 north. This school year we have been allowed to start working on the two Pollinator Gardens, which you might have seen while coming in from recess or being dropped off in the morning.
Additionally, this year the members of the club have sent postcards to our New York State politicians to request that they pass the Climate Education bill, the Climate Change Superfund Act, the Bigger Better Bottle bill, and the NY Heat Act. During this time, the club also made a worm bin to put compost into after learning about composting and what can be composted. In the future, Mr. Krebs (the club advisor) plans to not only continue working on the Pollinator Gardens, but to also host events for the community to learn more about how to plant a small garden too.
