Responses to Stories
Third and fourth grade students listened to the story of Cecelia Payne, the woman who discovered how stars are made. The illustrations are galactic, and student responses were inspired. Read more about this book on the "Book of the Day" webpage listed above.
3rd grade students made Ink Tigers in Art with Mrs. Profaci, inspired by the work of French painter, Henri Rousseau. During Library classes students listened to the story, The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau, by Michelle Markel. The story highlights Henri's perseverance with painting even though he was laughed at for many years as being untalented.
Third grade students listened to the story, Pa, Me, and Our Sidewalk Pantry, written by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by Zara Gonzalez Hoang. Then they wrote a sentence about a food they love that they would share, or, a pair of foods that they love to eat together. Here are their responses. Click through the gallery.

Lenape students took on the challenge to create an eerie setting with the words and descriptions in the book Pumpkin Eye, by Denise Fleming. Audios are a minute or less. Listen to them all and decide which is the scariest!

PumpkinFest 2018 - A little bit of conversation with your poetry!
Ms. Oppenheimer's and Ms. Beck's class give us a rendition of a poem Kwame Alexander wrote to celebrate Maya Angelou. It is called, "Majestic". This was the first group of the day to respond to the question, "What do we not know about you, just by looking at you?" Listen to what they shared.
Ms. Feldmann's class Native American Chief Dan George is celebrated in this poem which encourages each of us to consciously greet each day. The students share some things about themselves that are not obvious just by looking at them.
Ms. Maley's class talked about the themes in Dave Egger's book, Her Right Foot. Whose foot? Take a guess after looking at this cover (book available in Lenape Library) and listen to what they have to say.
Ms. King's and Ms. Bulson's class consider the days of the week strung out on a silver chain, like a "Necklace", by Naomi Shahib Nye.
Ms. Manning's class Quacks its way through a poem from the book, Nest, Nook, and Cranny by Susan Blackaby.
Ms. Foret's class shares Douglas Florian's, "Autumnescent" and some things they've noticed in their yards.
"What to do with Autumn Leaves..." a poem with suggestions by Douglas Florian, presented by Mr. Longbotham's and Ms. Christiansen's class.
Ms. Burdick's and Ms. Wilcox's classes offer a poem about Thanksgiving....and then tell us some things they look forward to with their own Thanksgiving celebration.
Mr. Monheit's class talks about their PumpkinFest Day and what they liked best!
Ms. Majthenyi's and Ms. Rice's class rally to beat the rain that is now coming down steady at the end of our PumpkinFest Day! They give us the poem, "How to Write a Poem", celebrating Naomi Shahib Nye, written by Kwame Alexander.
PumpkinFest 2017
Station 6 at the November 14, 2017 PumpkinFest was a celebration of student voices accepting the challenge to read the words of poets they may or may not have heard before. The background sounds are those of other Lenape students outside at Stations 1-5.
These "cold readings" capture the fun spirit of the day. We weren't looking for polished programs, but imagine with a few more practice runs that the deliveries could be performances!
