Would the Sea Still Sing to Me

Poem by Jenna Hanchey

Would the sea still sing to me

if I leave her here, earthbound?

E’en if she did, could I hear—

far from dampened sphere—the sound?

Wide void gaping between us,

only trust may traverse it.

Waves hindered, lapping the edge—

no cracks to wedge, nor gaps fit.

Who am I without her song?

Is it wrong that I wonder?

Op’ning paths to find myself

from ocean’s wealth asunder.

Echoes come to me on land

like sand caught between my toes

of harmonies there thund’rous—

all of us wrought by her flows.

But in space will be silence:

a violence—or gift of choice.

Will I be happier there—

or ever seeking sea’s voice?
