We hope our new counseling website is a useful resource for all students, parents, guardians, and families. This will serve as a resource to locate information about the counseling department.
As school counselors, we focus on 3 main areas:
Academics
College/career
Social-emotional
Students may meet with their counselor by stopping by the counseling office during their free time (before school, brunch, lunch, or after school. Students are responsible for making up any work/assignments they may have missed in class due to a counseling meeting.
There are digital student help request forms for each counselor. Students, you may submit a request form for your specific counselor.Â
Student Help Request Form for Ms. Quinonez (Last names A-P)
Student Help Request Form for Ms. Cesena (Last names Q-Z & Puente)
Reminder, these forms are NOT to be used for urgent matters. If you are at school and something urgent comes up, go to a staff member IMMEDIATELY.
If there is a safety issue outside of school, please call 911 for emergencies. For non-emergencies, you may call the Newark Police Department at 510-578-4237.
Parents/guardians: if you need to get in contact with your student's counselor, please send them an email:
Marissa Quinonez (Last names A-P): mquinonez@newarkunified.org
Celina Cesena (Last names Q-Z & Puente): ccesena@newarkunified.org
School counselors practice confidentiality, meaning what is shared between the student and the counselor, stays between them. However, school counselors are allowed to break confidentiality if there is a safety concern. If a student discloses intent to harm themselves or others, or if they are being harmed by someone else, additional adults and support services will be contacted for help.

Thinking before acting and speaking is very important. Words and actions can be harmful and can create a series of events and consequences. Before you act/speak/post something, ask yourself these 5 questions:
Is it true?
Is it helpful?
Is it important?
Is it necessary?
Is it kind?
If you answer "no" to any of these 5 questions, that means you should stop yourself before you do/say something that could potentially be harmful.
