Our creation is an urban centre. This urban centre is necessary because it has many important buildings for the population. It represents a small neighbourhood within a city. Within this neighbourhood there are many categories of buildings and their uses. There are the healthcare buildings which are the hospital and doctor office. Both are extremely important to the health and safety of people. There is also a housing area where there is a neighborhood filled with houses and a park, there are a couple buildings near the neighborhood as well. We also have a Walmart to fulfill the market needs. This is why our little urban town is necessary.
The space we created will be used by all people, no matter what religion. But our housing is fairly close together, which makes it easy for Jews to host other people at their house on Shabbat. The Walmart has a lot of kosher food giving a wide selection of food for shabbat. It also sells a lot of Shabbat items such as, Shabbat candles, Chanukiah, Havdalah candles and much more. All the buildings also have Shabbat proof elevators. This has been specifically designed for jews and other minorities that need things for shabbat and the high holidays.
I liked how we had creative control over our mini-town. It was very interesting to think and create a town where there were specifically engineered things for jews. It was very challenging to put the buildings together. The hot glue gun required a gun that I found difficult to maneuver. Another thing was that the glue, though it kept the cardboard together, made our buildings rather shaky, and unstable. We had to work very hard to keep everything standing. This project made me think about how a town needs to have very specific necessities in a limited amount of space, and how to fit everything in it. This project is a very interesting work in progress as several parts can be improved. I overall enjoyed it.
This is why my living room is useful. It has a large couch for a large Jewish family. It has Shabbat candles on the table. There is an indoor garden which helps beautify the space. Also, the family can use the vegetables and fruits for their meals which makes their food more affordable. They can use the decorative flowers to brighten up the space on holidays. Urban farming can be done inside a house.
The house is close to the shul.
I liked designing rooms on Floorplanner and finding different furniture and accessories for the rooms I made. I liked thinking what the rooms would look like. It was challenging at first to figure out how to use floorplanner because I am not good with technology and some things weren’t available to put in the rooms. It was hard to think of ideas to help the Jewish community and to help urban planning. I built the house and then thought of things to add afterwards.
The kitchen of the design is modern, because I wanted to put it simply for clean and tidy spaces that are unlikely to go out of style. The design style is the ultimate for global living, which is good for an urban space and attracts more people. Large open space, but with a separate dining area. This design for the kitchen has separate sinks, ovens/microwaves, and utensils to separate meat and dairy products, so the kitchen would be clean and kosher. It has closets to keep extra usable things for Shabbat and other holidays in the dining area. This activity made me think of how we can make important spaces with many ideas we can think of. We could be creative with how we could use interior diagrams. I really liked this activity because we get to show our designs and our ideas of building a new urban space and helping the Jewish community living in this city.
What I found challenging is making a helpful design to help the Jewish community in some way though, (I wouldn't have any extra space for separating sinks and ovens, or splitting up the dining area, etc.)
