Welcome to an exploration of Black history through art, a journey that extends far beyond the confines of Black History Month. In our school and community, we recognise that Black history is not a limited or isolated celebration; rather, it is an integral part of the vibrant tapestry that makes up our cultural identity. Through the lens of artistic expression, we aim to showcase the richness, resilience, and diversity inherent in Black history, emphasizing that this narrative deserves recognition and appreciation every day of the year.

Lilian Bader x BLM

In Y5 we learnt about Lilian Bader - During WW11 she was one of the first Black women to join the British armed forces. Prior to this, there were very limited opportunities available to people of colour in Britain. The racial injustices Lilian Bader faced and fought against, demonstrate her resilence.

We then looked at the Black Lives Matter movement which was founded in 2013. We discussed how this movement advocates for racial equality and justice, addressing issues such as police brutality, systemic racism, and social inequality.

We decided to create our Black Lives Matter banners, thinking back to the injustices Lilian Bader experienced and how they relate to the broader issues of racial injustices now.

Look at our banners and take time to reflect on how historical injustices have persisted and evolved into current challenges in our times.
