Sunshine Cottage

2023 First Trip Back To Sunshine Since Covid

Field Trip To Sunshine Cottage

Thursday October 3, 2019, MacArthur's Advanced ASL students visited Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children here in San Antonio.  The trip began in their beautiful conference room and Community Outreach Specialist, Leslie Walter, telling them about the history and purpose of this private school and why they don't use sign language.  Students then got to visit several classrooms and interact with many students in their classes. Finally, the director of audiology and 2 of their veteran speech pathologists spoke to MacArthur students about what they do and invited them to come back and shadow them during a day to see more about what they do.

Why do MacArthur students come here if they don't use sign language?

Career exploration is one of the main reasons. Several students on this trip talked about their interest in pursuing careers in Speech pathology and Deaf Education, which can, but do not always include sign language. This trip reveals other possible career options that have some connection to ASL.

The MacArthur students represented themselves well by listening attentively and asking the professionals a plethora of good questions. They also talked to many of the students they met in class and in some cases joined in the class activity that was going on when we arrived.
