ELAR

"There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do." - Derek Jeter

The first half of this week students will work on finishing up mini-projects, and this will officially end our study of summer reading.

The second half of the week will be vocabulary study.  We'll also take a moment to review the short-answer-response writing process (we consistently work on short-answer responses throughout the school year).

MATH

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics." -Paul Halmos

Algebra: Our focus this week will be on slope, or rate of change. There are many applications for slope. The most common use of the word slope refers to vertical distance over horizontal distance, and we see these in ramps and hills. We will also look at speed as rate of change, which connects to the distance formula used in science class.

Geometry:  Unit 2 starts this week and covers lines and angle relationships. Much of the theorems in this unit were introduced and used in 6th grade HAM. Students will look at the origins of the postulates and theorems around angle relationships and will be proving them using two column proofs and written proofs.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. – Albert Einstein

We just wrapped up Galaxies and the Electromagnetic Spectrum. We also took a short quiz on the two.

This week we will be working on stars and the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. Students will determine the relationship between a stars luminosity and its temperature. They will look at characteristics of the four main groups of stars on the HR Diagram. Students will make connections between a stars color, temperature, age, and size.

This will wrap up our Universe unit and we will take a Unit exam shortly after. Students need to be checking their grades in Skyward to ensure that they are caught up. Work missing from the Universe unit will no longer be accepted after the Unit exam, per district policy.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

This past week, your historian took their Unit 1 Test on Thursday and had the opportunity to do test corrections on Friday. I offer test corrections for two reasons; 1) I am not trying to fail your historian and its an opportunity for them be successful, 2) doing the corrections is way to have your historian reflect and grow their learning.

But, it is now the second month of school and our second unit is upon us! Unit Two is one of the more exciting units: Causes of Revolution and the Revolutionary War. Your historian will get to learn about absolutely thrilling stuff, like debt and taxes! Wow!!

In all seriousness, we get to investigate all kinds of cool battles, like Lexington, Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown. We get to examine famous American heros, like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine, and Abigail Adams. All my past historians have always enjoyed getting to look at the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. I am absolutely certain yours will too!

Of course we will be taking notes this week, but we are also going to start working on increasing your historian's social studies vocabulary! This unit introduces all kinds of new words like alliance, petition, convention, militia, minutemen, loyalist, patriot, delegate, congress, boycott, tariff, massacre, intolerable, declaration, grievances, quarter, ect....

Let's have an awesome second month!!

Mr. Lovett's Classes

Principles of Architecture:

This week in Principles of Architecture we will be learning how to read floor plans. This is one of my favorite units as we get a little bit of history using the "Sears Modern Home." We will be taking an assessment by Wednesday to ensure everyone can identify common structural components.

Digital Media 2:

Symmetry September is under way!  Next week, we will be looking at ethical and legal issues facing digital creators. We will also begin getting into Adobe Illustrator brushing up or pen tool skills.

Students in all DATA 8th grade tech classes enjoy complimentary access to Adobe Creative Cloud, made possible by the support of NEISD. This means they can freely use Adobe's suite of applications on their personal devices at home. This opportunity equips them with tools for graphic design, video editing, photography, animation, and more. Feel free to contact me for assistance in setting up this software at home.
