ELAR

We will be working and playing with Greek and Latin root words and their English derivatives this last week of school. We will also be putting our major pieces of writing in our digital portfolios.

Classic novel reading schedule:

(Your student is reading one of these choices.)

By Tuesday, May 28th:

Tom Sawyer: Ch. 30-end, related reading.

Alice Books: both finished and related reading

A Tale of Two Cities: Book 3, Ch. 8-end.

There will be some time to read in class, but students should plan on also reading at home to stay caught up.

I will need the physical copies of the classic novels that I signed out to students back on Wednesday, May 29th.

There is no more homework, but there are extra credit assignments: memorizing a poem, totally uncalled-for writing, etc.

There are still a very, very few students who did not yet complete their pre-STAAR individual e-tutorials homework on Edgenuity. They should get these done and in ASAP.

I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind.

MATH

6th Honors/7th HAM

Monday is a holiday. Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday, we will watch Monsters University with Questions the students will need to answer as the movie plays.

Due to the Beach Clean-Up being cancelled because of weather, we have decided to take out our 4th period classes and have them clean up the campus grounds. The students will get 2 hours of service hours for next week.  This will occur Wednesday and Thursday.

Thursday and Friday are early release days. Students will get out at 1:25.

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

YOU DID IT!! You're truly remarkable!

Hi! Mr. Gonzalez here.

This week's ridiculous WiFi name is "The LAN Before Time"  (hehe throwback).

Students are working on their final Photoshop project: colorizing black and white photos! Starting this week, students may add extra credit points to any assignment in the T4 grading period. Students are also getting their last extra credit assignments this week and adding their work to their digital portfolios.

It's been a wonderful year and we are so happy with all our student portfolios! Please ask your student to share their work with you, they will be sending an email to next year's teachers soon with links to their portfolio and folder with all their exemplary work from the year past.

Exploring Multimedia

With the year coming to an end, it's time to review the work we've done and the skills students have been developing over the last nine months. Since all their work is posted on their portfolios, we'll take a couple of days to evaluate each other's work to determine which of them deserves to be a semi-finalist in our voting for the year's Top Portfolios. All students will then visit these highlighted websites and cast their votes for their favorites.

If there is one skill we know for sure every student progressed in their mastery of, it's being confronted with an unfamiliar piece of software and learning enough to create something with it in a short amount of time. We put this to the test by giving students who have truly completed their portfolios a few days to make a game with Microsoft's "Kodu Game Lab", which is a simplified 3D construction kit that easily lets users make fully functional (if a bit basic) video games. Our goal each year is to run KoduCon during the last week of school - a round-robin "competition" in which each students plays every working game and votes on their favorite. It makes for an exciting ending to a year packed with projects!

Tutoring passes are available for every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help and extra time with the more challenging tasks and techniques we cover in Multimedia.
