ELAR

"Raise your words, not your voice.  It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder."

- Rumi

We officially end the argumentative essay writing process by typing up our final copies this week.  I am incredibly proud of the effort students have put forth throughout this process.  It's been going on for weeks now, and students have shown great maturity in their patience and progress.  I'm excited to see the end result and hope they take pride in what they've accomplished.

I had promised several students that corrections to the DEUA Unit 3 test would come this week.  Corrections will happen but not this week; we'll have to push that back to the week of Feb 26th.

MATH

"Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater." -Albert Einstein

Please remind your students that when they are struggling, they are learning!

Algebra: We continue our journey with polynomial operations this week. These will feel complex to students until they become more comfortable with exponents. We will focus most of our efforts on multiplying binomials as this will help make factoring make more sense.

Geometry: After spending time with quadrilaterals, we will discover patterns for the interior and exterior angles of n-sided polygons, as well as the area of regular polygons.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. --Benjamin Spock

Last week we discussed the three plate boundaries and the geologic features that form at each one. Students learned about convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. Students were introduce to the following land features: folded mountains, fault block mountains, island arcs, trenches, rift valleys, mid-ocean ridges, form at each of the three plate boundaries. Students also completed lab stations and a quiz on plate tectonics.

We will spend this week on topographic maps. Students will analyze land features as well as the relief on maps. They will look at areas of both high and low relief on a map, as well as calculate the relief. Students will also practice identifying landmarks on maps such as roads, buildings, railroad tracks, churches, schools, and hospitals.

Tutoring is offered on Mondays and Fridays from 3:45-4:15.

Week 25! Onto Unit 6: Westward Expansion and Andrew Jackson. We'll learn about each piece of land that America acquired and Jackson's role in expanding west. This is such a short and straightforward unit, so much so that your historian won't even take a unit test on it. Instead, your historian will manifest their destiny (ha) and create an argumentative essay to demonstrate their mastery.

Principles of Architecture:

Last week we finished putting the roofs on our houses AND took a little extra time to apply some textures to them giving them a finished look. Next week we will begin our unit on landscape architecture!

Digital Media 2:

"Harmony in February" is making way to the next design principle - Variety.  Variety compliments harmony and creates visual interest. I probably should have called February "Hariety" or "Varmony" ...

Therefore, we shall finish out the month of February with Varmony!!
