"If the plan doesn't work, change the plan, but never the goal." - Anonymous

Between my personal absences the week prior and extending time last week to finish up course registrations for 9th grade, we've gotten behind on the argumentative writing process, BUT I will not be deterred!  I've had to make adjustments to my original timeline, but it will all work out in the end.

This week students will draft a claim and reasons around a topic they chose at the end of last week and spend the rest of the week seeking out and documenting sources that support their reasoning.

MATH

"Math is the language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos."

-Neil deGrasse Tyson

Algebra: Having recently explored Quadratic Functions with an exponent of 2, we will now move on to working with higher exponents! Students have worked with numerical bases raised to an exponent in previous grades but now we will be looking at variables raised to an exponent and simplifying expressions.

Geometry: We have started our learning of trigonometry with the basic ratios of sine, cosine and tangent. Students will practice using these ratios to find missing sides and angles of triangles.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. --Benjamin Spock

Last week we finished up our Newton's laws projects. Students created videos and animations using apps such as Snap or Scratch to demonstrate their understanding of Newton's Laws of motion. Students were to demonstrate and explain two examples for each of the three laws.

We will begin this week with presentations of our projects.  We will be reviewing for our unit test that will be administered Thursday. Students should have ALL missing work turned in by Thursday, prior to moving on to our next unit.

Once we complete our Force and Motion unit, we will then move on to our Geology unit. Our focus for the next few weeks will be on evidence that supports the Theory of Plate Tectonics.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment. Students can attend tutoring from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

🏭⚙️🏭⚙️🏭⚙️🏭⚙️🏭⚙️

And just like that January is over! Your historian has 4 months left of 8th grade!!!

This week, we'll continue working our way through our Industrialization and Reform unit. We'll get into the 19th Century's new inventions and their impacts on society. Depending on how fast we get through stuff, we will hopefully get to one of my favorite activities: The Urban Game. Your historian will become an urban planner and have to plan around the real-time issues of a growing industrial city!

Grades are also fully updated. If your historian has an assignment in the grade book as missing, I don't have it! Late assignments will have points deducted, but a late assignment is better than a zero :D

Thank you! Have a great week!
