ELAR

"Rhetoric is the art of ruling the minds of men." - Plato

This short weeks finds us starting the official writing process, as we prepare to write an argumentative essay.  With notes in hand about elements and structure, students will browse preselected topics, choose one, and begin brainstorming and drafting parts of their argument in chunks ... this eases students into what becomes a lengthy but purposeful writing process.

Students should understand that this writing process, while it has several components and will literally take weeks to get through, is structured with tools meant to bring out their absolute best writing, and I will be guiding them every step of the way.  It takes plenty of patience and lots of effort, but they should come out with a writing piece they can be proud of, and I hope students will find something in this process that will be useful to them as they continue writing essays through the rest of their academic careers.

MATH

"Math is the language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos."

-Neil deGrasse Tyson

Algebra: We will extend our knowledge of quadratic functions by examining the connections between the equations and graphs. Students will then participate in a catapult lab and record the parabolic path of the projectile.

Geometry: The beginning of the week will include a wrap up of special triangles, and we will move on to basic trigonometric ratios.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

“Life is about balance. Be kind, but don’t let people abuse you. Trust, but don’t be deceived. Be content, but never stop improving yourself.”Zig Zigler

This week we continue exploring the intricacies of physics, specifically focusing on the concept of forces. Our exploration will center around the distinctions between balanced and unbalanced forces, providing a nuanced understanding of their impact on motion. To follow up this week's learning we will soon delve into Newton's Laws of Motion.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🏛️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Halfway through January already? This year is going to fly by!

We're approaching the end of our First Five Presidents unit, which means it is time for a project and test. Your historian will be learning how to create a resume! Not for themselves, but for one of our first five Presidents. I hope this project gets your historian to review the Presidents before their test, while also getting them thinking about their futures. Regardless of where they want to go, resume writing is pretty unavoidable!

In regards to the Unit 4 test, we'll see what the weather does and how the district reacts to the weather. If nothing changes, we'll test this Friday. If things do change the test will be pushed to the following week. As always, please encourage your historian to study. They can take their notes home, play our Review Gimkit, and use my slides in Classroom.

Forgive me if this is too much, but I can't resist.  I hope that, like the White House in the War of 1812, you stay toasty warm!

Mr. Lovett's Classes

Principles of Architecture:

Last week we learned, sketched, and 3d modeled our dining rooms and entryways. Next week we move on to our final area: the service area.

Digital Media 2:

As we continue to grow through Jan-HUE-ary, we have been experimenting with different color harmonies. Last week we explored analogous colors using the Adobe Color Wheel tool and Illustrator. Next week we will cover monochromatic, triad and complementary colors. These activities are showing them how color psychology can be employed to evoke emotion in the audience while turning out a a visually appealing product
