ELAR

"Real persuasion comes from putting more of you into everything you say.  Words have an effect. Words loaded with emotion have a powerful effect."

- Jim Rohn

This week students apply their knowledge of persuasive appeals by creating billboards ... a creative extension of their ability to persuade using their passions and interests

On Wednesday (Jan. 10), all of 8th grade will be touring DATA High School at Roosevelt!  Even if your student does not plan to attend DATA HS, it will be a great opportunity to become briefly immersed in the high school environment.

The week ends with tunneling their learning of persuasion into argumentative writing:  Students will take notes on the argumentative essay structure.

MATH

"Math is the language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos."

-Neil deGrasse Tyson

Algebra: Unit G quiz over Quadratic Graphs will be Monday or Tuesday this week. We will look over quiz grades and continue learning about the equations for quadratic functions as students are ready.

Geometry: Extending our existing knowledge of right triangles, we will use the pythagorean theorem to notice patterns and use these patterns to solve problems. Unit 6 Quiz over special right triangles will be taken on Friday.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” –Albert Einstein

We are now working on our Physics unit. We are focusing this week on differentiating between speed, velocity, and acceleration. We are practicing calculating both speed and acceleration as well as creating and interpreting graphs of motion. We will complete a lab write up at the end of the week where we will implement data collection, create a graph, and analyze our data.

Upon completion of speed, velocity, and acceleration, we will move on to forces, both balanced and unbalanced forces.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🏛️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

It was so good seeing your historian back in class this week! Can you believe they only have five months left of being an 8th grader!?!? Feels like we just started!

This past week we covered the Federalist Era: Washington and Adams. This week we'll be moving on to talk about our Democratic-Republican Presidents: Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. Oh yeah, that's right! We're going to enter the Era of Good Feelings! Your historian will also learn about some early American Supreme Court cases.

This unit is a FAST one, not this week, but at the end of next week, your historian will take their Unit 4 Test.

Mr. Lovett's Classes

If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don't think it necessarily means you're a hard worker. It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance.  ~ Jack Handey

Principles of Architecture:

Last week we revisited digital citizenship through a district mandated unit. This week we will start a unit on dining rooms and entryways.  Students will be tested over their knowledge toward the end of the week.

Digital Media 2:

Last week we revisited digital citizenship through a district mandated unit. This week we will start the deep dive into web design. This is going to be a crash course in coding HTML5 and CSS3. It is NOT easy; however, when we are done, your student will be able to code a simple web page.
