ELAR

"Listen with the intent to understand, not the intent to reply."

- Stephen Covey

Welcome back to the second half of the school year!

Can you believe our 8th grade class is just one semester away from high school?!

This week we move into the argumentative unit - we'll talk about rhetoric and persuasion, beginning with a TedTalk about "speaking so people want to listen."  Students will write notes about what effective communication is, as well as notes on rhetoric and persuasive technique.  There will be some practice with identifying persuasive techniques this week as well.

MATH

Welcome back! I am excited to share more math discovery with 8th graders as we prepare for high school.

Algebra: We spent the first semester working with linear functions, which feature repetitive addition. We will now be moving on to different functions, including quadratic and exponential.

Unit G begins this week and will include the exploration of Quadratic Functions and their graphs.

Geometry: We will begin Unit 6: Special Right Triangles and Trigonometry this week.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

Welcome back students! I hope you enjoyed your winter break with your family!

We will begin our second semester with our Physics unit. We will start with balanced and unbalanced forces. We will complete lab investigations and practice calculating net forces.

We will continue our Physics unit as we delve into speed, velocity, and acceleration. We will practice interpreting and creating motion graphs through lab investigations that we complete. We will also practice calculating both speed and acceleration.

Lastly, we will jump into Newton's laws of motion.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

If you have any questions, you may email me at egonza10@neisd.net

⛓️⛵⛓️⛵⛓️⛵⛓️⛵⛓️⛵⛓️

Welcome back! New year, new unit!

Welcome to Unit 4: New Republic, or as I like to call it, the First Five Presidents. Starting with Washington and ending a few weeks later with Monroe, we'll look at all the cool (and not-so-cool) things each President did. Along the way, we'll also discover what political parties are, what impressed American sailors (har-har), why representatives were physically fighting each other in Congress (that's right, our government has always been divisive), and the story behind the White House burning down!

Unit 4 is a breath of fresh air, after our long Government unit, and I'm so looking forward to hitting the ground running! Let's make it a good new year!!!!

Mr. Lovett's Classes

Principles of Architecture:

We didn't quite get finished with our home designs before the winter break. It is one of the most challenging and important units we have in architecture. I am not going to rush us through it! The spring semester holds a lot of fun projects for us and I'm looking forward to seeing what our kids put together!

Digital Media 2:

I am really excited about our upcoming unit of study in Digital Media 2. We are going to be taking a deep dive into web design. This is going to be a crash course in coding. It is NOT easy; however, when we are done, your student will be able to code in HTML and CSS and be able to create simple web pages. One of the best things about this unit; they will be able to use code to edit wysiwygs and this is going to greatly help students that are going into video game development and/or cyber security.
