The Outsiders

This week we'll mix up our reading of texts - informational and fictional storytelling - related to Edgar Allan Poe.  We'll start the week with a "web hunt" of information on Poe's personal life and career.  Then, we'll read one of his short stories.

Beyond that, we'll have a Redemption Day - spend a class period getting caught up on all assignments - and a day testing skills and knowledge around literary fiction.  The week ends viewing an informational video about the holocaust.

MATH

"Mathematics is the abstract key which turns the lock of the physical universe."

-John Polkinghome

Algebra: We will extend our knowledge of linear functions to include a third form, point-slope form. This form is useful when the y-intercept is unknown.

Algebra 5th period: Students will apply their knowledge of linear equations to systems of equations, which include more than one equation. They will look at multiple methods of solving for the solution.

Geometry: Now that we have discovered the specifics of what is required to determine triangle congruence, we will apply that knowledge to solve problems and also prove these theorems.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

"You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him discover it in himself."- Galileo

We completed our unit test on Seasons, Moon Phases, and Tides last week.

Students began part of their PBL on Friday which included researching the chemistry of vaping. Students researched the effect nicotine has on the brain, and body. How nicotine affects mental health, and the impact of nicotine on brain development and mental well-being. They had to explain the chemical composition of vaping as well as explain the short-term and long-term effects on the body, including mental health.

We will now move on to our Chemistry unit which will carry us through the holiday break. We begin by looking at atoms and the structure, including charge, size, mass, and location of subatomic particles. We will relate atomic structure to the periodic table and look at patterns and trends.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜

It's week 11 and our government unit is in full swing! We've been talking about the strengths and the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. Rough drafts are never perfect! The Founding Fathers needed time to work out the kinks!

In class this week, your historian will look at America's beta political parties, the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. We'll talk about why each side didn't see eye-to-eye and how they managed to compromise. Our Constitution was created out of an inability to be civil and get along!

I have grades updated! Thank you for giving me some grace in getting them in. Your historian may have a missing assignment right now! All of these assignments are accessible in Classroom. If your historian needs to use one of the school chromebooks, or wants my assistance, they can come for tutoring. Now, I know this time of year becomes really hectic and busy, for us grown-ups and for your historian. I'm going to grant a little bit of grace on these assignments, as you granted me grace when I fell behind entering grades. If your historian can get their missing or late work completed by this Friday (11/3), I will waive our late-work policy for them.

AV Comm/Video Game Design

Greetings DATA Families!
Have a great week!

AV Comm: Students will receive a permission form to use DSLR cameras, a crucial step to initiate our photography unit and begin capturing captivating images. This form signifies our commitment to responsible camera usage and care. It also marks the transition from theory to practice for our students, as they will be applying the lighting, camera, and framing techniques they've acquired during their nature walk on campus. The knowledge and skills gained during this experience will undoubtedly enhance their understanding of photography and contribute to their creative growth. Therefore, the timely return of these permission forms is integral to ensuring that our budding photographers can fully engage in this enriching educational journey.

Video Game Design: In our ongoing exploration of programming, students will persist in their exciting journey with SNAP! 2D gaming software, where they'll delve into the intricate world of game development. Specifically, they'll be undertaking the thrilling challenge of creating a Mario Bros. video platform game. This shift in our project focus was made to reinforce essential programming fundamentals, encompassing the adept use of reporting blocks, predicates, and the creation of variables within their code. Through this strategic pivot, students will not only craft a captivating and interactive gaming experience but also solidify their understanding of core concepts, building a strong foundation for their future coding endeavors.

Mr. Lovett's Classes

Principles of Architecture:

Architecture students are going to be making final touches on their interior design projects (they look great)! Then they will be starting a loooong project where they will design their own home based on research the do on the three areas of the home: service, sleeping, and living.

Digital Media 2:

Typotober is coming to a close, I have been very pleased with student work. Next week we will start a unit on our next great design principle. Repetition... repeating things... doing things over and over... kinda like Déjà vu.
