ELAR

"Darry did care about me ... and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me ... and I wondered how I could ever have thought him hard and unfeeling."  - Ponyboy Curtis in The Outsiders

Heading into the second half of the novel The Outsiders, we'll slow things down a bit to focus on all things related to character - behavior, influence and motivation, connections, perspective.  Part of this study of character will involve making inferences, and this is a skill many readers, even seasoned ones, struggle with.  So we'll do some notetaking and weave the practice of inferring into our beloved characters from the novel.

STAY TUNED this week for an announcement regarding a "Movie Night" after we conclude our reading of the novel ... details to come!

MATH

"Mathematics is the abstract key which turns the lock of the physical universe."

-John Polkinghome

Algebra: Students will begin Unit D, where we will look at linear functions in multiple forms and transform them to slope-intercept form to find key attributes.

Algebra 5th period: We will extend our knowledge of linear functions to include a third form, point-slope form. This form is useful when the y-intercept is unknown.

Geometry: We will test Unit 3 on Tuesday, October 17. The test will cover definitions and theorems related to triangle types, special segments and centers.

Tutoring: Thursday before and after school or by appointment. mlund@neisd.net

SCIENCE

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” –Albert Einstein

The first nine weeks has now come to an end. We learned about the Universe along with Seasons and Moon Phases.

We will continue covering the lunar cycle through the week. We will learn the different phases of the moon, discuss what causes us to see the different phases. We will look at the relationship between the Earth and Moon as well as the length of rotation and revolution for the moon. Students will have to predict moon phases on any given day.

There are several hands-on activities we complete to expose the students to more practice. We will complete a lunar lollipops lab and a lab which uses ping pong balls to represent the moon.

Tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can attend from 7:45-8:15 am.

U.S. History through 1877

We are Living History!

📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜📜

Aw, we're in double digits now! Week 10!

Your historian will be taking their Unit 2 Test this Tuesday, the 17th! As per usual, they have access to my Unit 2 slides to review anything they feel uncertain of, as well as a review Gimkit to play posted in Google Classroom. We'll do our usual test corrections on Wednesday and then on Thursday we get to start Unit 3!!!!!

Unit 3 is our "Early Government" unit. Which, I know, sounds riveting. Endless excitement. So. Much. Fun. (I'm being sarcastic). It's not my favorite unit, and it's historically has not been my previous student's favorite unit, but its probably the most important one. I'll do my best to make it as engaging as possible, but there's only so fun you can make "popular sovereignty" and the "New Jersey plan." Things will pick back up again in Unit 4, and we'll have tons of exciting things to talk about, but only after your historian has mastered government.

AV Comm/Video Game Design

Greetings DATA Families!
Have a great week!

AV Comm: The students have completed their art unit and are now transitioning to their photography segment, where they will apply the principles and elements of art. In this phase, they will delve into the fundamentals of photography and become acquainted with the essentials of operating a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera.

Video Game Design: Students have concluded their animation unit using SNAP!, and they are now embarking on their next project: creating their first platform game. This program will emulate the style of a game similar to Mario Bros.

Welcome to the 2nd grading period!

Mr. Lovett's Classes

Principles of Architecture:

Architecture students created a portfolio to showcase their architecture work AND they finished off the design piece of their interior design projects. Next week they will be working on the presentation phase. This will require them to work across platforms using both SketchUp and Photoshop to make a color board.

Digital Media 2:

Typotober is still going strong.  There will be many chances over the next two weeks for students to showcase their typography skills. Next week they will be starting on a unit dealing with technology skills in the 21st century.
