ELAR

We will be studying the elements of a story and the parts of a plot. We will be reading short stories about magic figs, turning eleven, and Supergirl! We will be going to the library for check-out and return on Thursday, Sept. 21st. Next week: The Hatchet Escape Room Adventure.

Homework is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net

MATH

6th Honors

This week we will complete the Unit with a couple of financial literacy lessons. We will explore how to compare annual salaries of jobs and what ways there are to pay for college. This will  close out our Unit and we will review and test the following week.

7th HAM

This week we will continue with Unit 2 by exploring how to solve inequalities with one variable on both sides and writing inequalities with one variable on boths sides from real world examples. We will try and close the week with Systems of Equations. If we can not get to that lesson, we will push it back to the following week.

SCIENCE

Now that we are moving past our first unit, we are looking forward to learning how to calculate speed using distance and time.  Students will be allowed to use a calculator (so yes, they are telling you the truth!) when calculating for speed.  We have lots of fun activities coming up, including our zombie apocalypse lab where we will determine what speed is needed to outrun our zombie classmates!

If tutoring is needed, I am available every weekday morning from 7:45-8:15.  Just please let me know if your child will be in attendance.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I can be reached via Remind or email: knucko@neisd.net

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "Bill Wi the Science Fi". (heh).

We are working on Google Drawings assignments this week and learning how to make flyers and posters. Students will be learning about how to use elements of art and we are also starting to learn about Graphic Design principles, a big part of the DATA program seeing as the D is for design. Please ask your student to show you their extra credit vector art portraits and other work they are doing for Tech Apps. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out! - Mr. G Contact: agonza33@neisd.net

Tutoring times:

Mon-Wed 7:45-8:15 AM

Mon-Wed 11:45-12:20PM with appointment

Exploring Multimedia

This week we are focused on the legibility of our text and the organization of our layers. Students have been given a full range of tools that turn text into graphical art, but too much of a good thing can make words very hard to read. Often a contrasting outline or glow is all that's needed to improve legibility, but font choice (and size!) also have a big impact on whether viewers (NOT the student) are able to read the words during the few seconds they are on the screen. Each element, whether background or text, is on a separate layer; those layers must be renamed to reflect what is on them. When they are imported into another piece of software like we are going to do with Premiere, students make a lot more work for themselves if they don't use descriptive layer names. Students also need to show they can create (and rename) at least one folder and place layers inside it - a very helpful tool!

Tutoring appointments are available every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help with difficult tasks and techniques.
