ELAR

This week, we will be delving into figurative language in a big way.

Coming soon: an escape room adventure based on the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. All DATA 6th graders should have read it over the summer.

Homework is once per week, assigned on Mondays, due Fridays, and found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well. I have classroom assignments represented on our Google Classroom. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-50 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net

MATH

6th Honors

This week we will explore subtracting integers with models and then adding and subtracting integers without models.

This week we will take a CFA over Scientific Notation Tuesday. Wednesday we will review and students can take the review packet home. Answers will be posted to Google Classroom. Thursday and Friday will be our first unit test over Real Numbers. Students will be given a chance Friday to make up the test if they failed it on Thursday. If they fail it again on Friday, I will send an email out to come for tutoring.

Week Ending 9/8/2023

No tutorials Monday the 4th

This week we will be exploring latitude and longitude! We will be practicing locating places on a map using absolute and relative location. We will also create a map of our city.

Some Google reminders:

Assignments in Google Classroom may show as missing if our student has not gone in and submit the assignment. If our student is showing a missing Google Classroom assignment please have our student check for completion then submit the assignment.

I use Google Classroom to assign all items so students in school and at home can have access. I do not post grades through Google Classroom. I use Skyward. Students normally complete their items they just forget to click submit BUT I can still see the assignment and grade it.

If you see "missing" chances are I have already graded what need to be graded and the final grade can be seen in Skyward. Students can check Skyward for missing grades then go back and refer to Classroom to complete assignments. If you ever have any questions about missing work please feel free to email me at bdavil@neisd.net:)

Tutorial times and Club times will be set soon and posted in this bottom paragraph. Any changes to set times will be posted at the beginning of my section. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hello! This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "Drop it like it's hot spot". (heh). Having finished our introductory Unit on Google Drive and Gmail, we will be having a unit quiz very soon!  There are blooket sets students can use to study the terms that will be on the quiz. I will announce the date of this quiz sometime this week. For our new unit, students are starting to learn about Google Docs and word processors. Students use word processors in nearly every class so it's important they learn what tools are available to them in the Google Docs application. Please ask them what tools they are learning to use and also ask your student if are typing regularly everyday to practice for typing assignments. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out! - Mr. G

Exploring Multimedia

This week we dive into Photoshop skills, including how to use a superb online clone called Photopea for when students don't have access to the full Adobe suite.

We will be making an "Intro" graphic as well one for each category they selected that will introduce that part of their video. They will be applying all manner of special effects to their text that will turn them into uniquely creative art pieces, including as Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss and Drop Shadows.  A bit of blending mode magic with the gradient tool and they'll have one-of-a-kind backgrounds for their text-art to shine on.

Tutoring appointments are available every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help with difficult tasks and techniques.
