ELAR

This week, we will be taking our Language Arts STAAR test on April 9th. Students should bring a book or two to read when they are finished.

Memoirs are now due April 11th, at which time we will be sharing them out loud.

Homework is now on Edgenuity and be tailored to each student's individual needs. Students should complete their individual e-courses by April 8th. This may be more homework than they are used to this wee,. They are welcome to come into my classroom before school any day but Wednesdays or any Monday or Friday afternoon to work on it.

I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind.

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hi, everyone! Mr. Gonzalez here.

This week's ridiculous WiFi name is "Wi-MCA" (heh).

We are learning to use new tools in Photoshop meant for digital painting and editing images so students will be making some very interesting art over the next couple of weeks!

Each student has practice documents filled with instructions on how use the tools we are learning and have documents in Google Classroom with screenshots of their work. Please ask your student to show you the work they have made in Photoshop using these documents and ask them to show you the practice documents and go over the tools we are learning. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Exploring Multimedia

There are 4 beginner apps that MIT provides tutorials for.  Students will work their way through the first one using the built-in panel with instructions that introduces students to the different elements of the Design and Blocks screens. They built the structure out of components and modify their properties in the Design phase, then switch to the coding page where the behaviors for those components are controlled. This is illustrated with the Hello Codi app, with students adding a button and changing it's image to one of the MIT App Inventor mascot, the bee Codi. They add the non-visible Sound element and then code the button so that it plays a buzzing sound when the image of the bee is pressed. It's pretty straightforward, simple programming, but watching dozens of kids building, downloading and installing the app onto their assigned tablet and gleefully buzzing away is always a rewarding sight (and sound!)

Tutoring passes are available for every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help and extra time with the more challenging tasks and techniques we cover in Multimedia.
