ELAR

We have had a strong first two weeks! It has been great to get to know your 6th graders. Roots Monsters should now be turned in. These are important as we will be using them throughout the school year in multiple classes.

All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week. It is especially important that students have a book to read when they finish their MAP testing on Wednesday, August 23rd.

We will be visiting our school library as a class on Tuesday, August 29th, and then about every 3 weeks thereafter.  If you are willing to get your student a library card from the San Antonio Public Library, we will help them get it connected to their NEISD Sora account. I sent some applications home with students who were interested. Here, also, is the link: https://sapl.sat.lib.tx.us/selfreg

Starting Monday, August 28th, homework will be once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Finally, I hope all 6th graders have read the book Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, which was our summer reading. We will be doing some activities centered around it in these early weeks of school, and coming back to it throughout the year. If your student hasn’t read it yet, there is still time! The book is widely available at libraries and bookstores, but if you have any trouble finding it, I can sign your student out a copy to borrow.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-50 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net

Tutoring

Tutoring: Tutoring will take place starting the week of October 5th for 6th Honors/GT. This allows students to take their first Unit exam and see if they mastered the material or not. The first Unit exam for 7th HAM is Sept. 7th and 8th. This means tutoring for 7th HAM will start the week of Sept 18th as we have early release the week following the first test.

6H - Thursday -3:40 pm to 4:30 pm.

7H - Tuesday - 3:40 pm  to 4:30 pm.

Students need to see me and let me know if they need to attend tutoring. If your student needs tutoring for any reason, I will reach out and let you know.

I can be reached via remind and email:jstarr1@neisd.net

SCIENCE

We are moving into physics!

This next section of our first unit involves dependent and independent variables, as well as inclined planes and how effective they are as a simple machine. We will investigate and explore, as well as analyze and describe certain phenomena as they relate to our physical world.

If tutoring is needed, I am available every weekday morning from 7:45-8:15.  Just please let me know if your child will be in attendance.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I can be reached via Remind or email: knucko@neisd.net

World Cultures

Week Ending 9/1/2023

This week we will be reviewing Basic Map Skills (Title, legend, scale, compass rose, World Map - Location of  7 Continents 5 Oceans). Students will be working towards making their own map of San Antonio.

Some Google reminders:

Assignments in Google Classroom may show as missing if our student has not gone in and submit the assignment. If our student is showing a missing Google Classroom assignment please have our student check for completion then submit the assignment.

I use Google Classroom to assign all items so students in school and at home can have access. I do not post grades through Google Classroom. I use Skyward. Students normally complete their items they just forget to click submit BUT I can still see the assignment and grade it.

If you see "missing" chances are I have already graded what need to be graded and the final grade can be seen in Skyward. Students can check Skyward for missing grades then go back and refer to Classroom to complete assignments. If you ever have any questions about missing work please feel free to email me at bdavil@neisd.net:)

Tutorial times and Club times will be set soon and posted in this bottom paragraph. Any changes to set times will be posted at the beginning of my section. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or are in need of anything! You can reach me on Remind or email: bdavil@neisd.net

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hi, everyone! Mr. Gonzalez here. This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "Panic! At the Cisco". (heh).

Having finished our overview of grades and DATA expectations, we are now learning about how to use word processors and cloud software, specifically Google Drive and Google Docs. Students will also be sending out practice emails and setting up their email signatures this week so they can send professional emails from their student accounts as needed. Grades have been put in for the first two assignments and if your student got a 79 or lower, they can redo any of these assignments for up to an 80. The upcoming 003 assignment cannot be corrected because it is a typing assessment so please ask your student about how they're practicing typing for this upcoming assignment.

If you have any questions about grades, please have your student sign into Google Classroom to show you their work and please go over their grades, my rubric, and my comments with them. Feel free to reach out if you have any other specific questions! - Mr. G Contact: agonza33@neisd.net

Tutoring times:

Mon-Wed 7:45-8:15 AM

Mon-Wed 11:45-12:20PM with appointment

Exploring
Multimedia

This week we conclude our search for images to use in our video. Students scour the web for the best examples to help tell the story of their Favorite Things, taking care to ensure they are sufficiently high resolution and quality to create an animated slideshow at Blu-Ray resolution. Each image must have their individual URL attached in the Comments field of its metadata, so students will learn to convert various formats to JPGs for maximum compatibility. Students who don't have a complete set will receive assistance from other students who have shown mastery of the Search and Save skills. Next week we'll begin working on our assets in Photoshop; students who complete their collection early will be given advanced access to special tutorials for independent practice with this versatile software.

Tutoring appointments are available every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help with difficult tasks and techniques.
