ELAR

We will have an ELAR practice STAAR test this Tuesday, Feb 6th. It is important for students to do well, to help me be able do the interesting/fun learning activities I have planned between now and April (rather than re-teaching).    Students should bring a book that day and the next (practice STAAR in math) to read when they finish testing.

Also this week, we will be starting impromptu speaking and kicking off an in-depth study of Greek and Latin root words.

There will be NO HOMEWORK this week, then, next following week, or one last time, homework will be found on BrainPOP. The following week, it will change. Stay tuned for details. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.

I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind.

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hi, everyone! Mr. Gonzalez here.  This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is
"New England Clam Router" (heh).

This week we are starting our Adobe Illustrator Unit! We began learning how to set up workspaces and use tools in Illustrator and we will begin creating our first images of a DATA themed Fiesta Medal as well as T-shirt designs for next year's DATA T-Shirts!

Students who were absent or who want to retake 028.1 or 028.2 can do so this week if they ask me about a time to do this. If a student got a 30 or lower on 028.1 or 028., they redo either assignment and earn up to the full 40 points. Please confirm that your student brings you their grade check handout and is reading all instructions for assignments posted in Google Classroom. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

Exploring Multimedia

The second program we will be using for 3D models is Blender, open-source software that has been developed over the years by some VERY talented people so that everyone has access to Hollywood-level animation tools... for free. We will just be scratching the surface by bringing in our Sketchup model and rendering images and simple videos of our houses sporting rather realistic shadows and reflections.  Blender is the most complex piece of software we'll be working with this year, but a simple search on YouTube will quickly give anyone a good idea of why a number of students continue developing their skills well after their 6th grade year is a distant memory. We will concentrate on simple lighting and keyframing of a 360° spin of our model to post on our portfolios before we return to Sketchup to sculpt something a bit more interesting than a simple house.

Tutoring passes are available for every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help and extra time with the more challenging tasks and techniques we cover in Multimedia.
