ELAR

This week,we will be turning our attention to informational and persuasive/argumentative writing.

If parents could encourage and facilitate their students to listen to or watch a reasonably unbiased newscast on a regular basis, it would definitely enhance their experience in this unit.

Also, we have been reviewing the parts of speech, so that we have a common language to talk about writing. Students should have learned thes in elementary school, but some schools did a better job than others and some students don't remember everything. We have been reviewing in class, and I have provided review materials on Google Classroom for students to use as needed. There will be a quiz, and students will be expected to know them going forward in writing lessons.

Homework is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind.

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hello! This week's ridiculous WiFi name is "Connection Lost" (heh).

In the next section of our Digital Citizenship unit, we learning about safe online practices such as creating strong passwords, keeping private information private, and being aware of unsafe activities to avoid online. Please have your student log into Google Classroom and show you their study guide they made last week and the current terms in our Passwords blooket so you can see what skills they will be tested on. - Mr. G Tutoring Times: Mon 7:45-8:30, Fri 11:45-12:30 Contact: agonza33@neisd.net

Exploring Multimedia

Last week we got the hang of navigating in 3D space using a mouse and keyboard, as well as how to enter precise measurements in constructing models. The ability to be absolutely exact with our dimensions is what makes Sketchup truly useful.

This week we begin construction of a Simple House. The minimum requirements are very straightforward but again, precision is key and measurements will be taken as their houses are graded. One of the most important concepts they are learning (besides how important keyboard shortcuts are!) is the use of "components", grouped objects that, when copied, can all be modified at the same time. Our four-paned windows have 29 individual faces and each of 6 walls must have a window, so students who do NOT use components would end up spending an enormous amount of time trying to paint all of those surfaces!

Tutoring passes are available for every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help and extra time with the more challenging tasks and techniques we cover in Multimedia.
