ELAR

This week, GT will be finishing up A Midsummer Night's Dream, and taking a test on it Tuesday, 1/9, and both GT and Honors classes will be turning our attention to informational and persuasive/argumentative writing.

If parents could encourage and facilitate their students to listen to or watch a reasonably unbiased newscast on a regular basis, it would definitely enhance their experience in this unit.

I have been encouraging your students to talk to you about getting a Bibliotech card. It's free! They have information about it on Google Classroom. Here are some links to get you started:

Homework is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind.an usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. SCIENCE

WELCOME BACK!!

Our "Snack Tectonics" lab activity is coming up on Tuesday, January 9th! This lab allows students to model the three different plate movements (convergent, divergent and transform) with every day snack items (many of which were donated by our families!). This is a highly engaging activity and students are usually super excited about it. The graham crackers, pudding cups and fruit roll ups, will be allowed to be eaten following the activity, if your student wants to; however if you would rather they not, please send me an email.

Accelerated Tutoring Reminder:

If you received correspondence from me regarding the need for additional tutoring for your student, please remember to have your student attend Monday, Tuesday or Thursday mornings, 7:45-8:15am OR on one of the designated Saturday School dates.

Please email me at knucko@neisd.net if you need additional information regarding this.

If tutoring is needed, I am available every weekday morning (except Wednesdays) from 7:45-8:15.  Just please let me know if your child will be in attendance.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I can be reached via Remind or email: knucko@neisd.net

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hi, everyone! Mr. Gonzalez here.

This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "FBI Surveillance Van" (heh). Students are continuing to learn about digital citizenship this week before we get into our first practice assignment using Photoshop. Please note that though it is not required, your students may download Adobe Photoshop on their home devices using school credentials should they want to work on their Photoshop assignments at home. Please send me an email if you'd like to know how to download Adobe products with your students' sign-in credentials and I will send you and your student an email with instructions.

Please go over with your student the expectations and new software we are covering in our class. Please have your student log into Google Classroom and show you their practice work and how they can access their vocabulary for Tech Apps in Google Classroom. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions! - Mr. G

Exploring Multimedia

Now that we've worked our way through several Adobe programs, we're ready to shift gears to focus on a few free and open-source design tools. We'll start by adding the third dimension to our projects, beginning with the free online version of Sketchup. It was originally purchased and then developed by Google for the purpose of empowering users worldwide to be creative in 3D. This modeling software is easy enough to learn quickly but takes a lot of practice to be able to become proficient at building full architectural models.

The paid version of this software is used everywhere by professionals in the industry, and is now maintained by Trimble Inc. We will be creating models we will be animating, with lessons on how to create 3D designs with an eye to printing many of them on our Prusa MK3s+ printer.

Tutoring passes are available for every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help and extra time with the more challenging tasks and techniques we cover in Multimedia.
