ELAR

Parents, If you don't already know about it, I want to offer you a chance to get a membership/card at Bibliotech, Bexar County’s amazing all-digital library. Bibliotech’s content is found in apps, for ebook and e-audiobook check-out, as well as other content, such as language-learning, self-publishing, tech lessons, and much more. Two of these apps are Hoopla (which also includes movies--along with books, audiobooks, and comics) and Kanopy (which is all movies and videos).

Like Netflix and other streaming services, they have two settings your account can be set on. One is a “kids” setting, which filters out all but the G-rated content, and one is a “grown-up” setting, which does include some PG, Pg-13, and even R-rated films. When you are setting your Hoopla and Kanopy apps, please make sure you choose the setting that is right for your family, which members get their own card, etc. Hoopla and Kanopy movies can also be watched on your streaming-ready TVs.

Along with Hoopla, the other great  app they have for ebooks and e-audiobooks include Cloud Library.

And it is all FREE if you live in Bexar County!

The reason I am sending this out is so that your student can have more options for books to read, especially when it comes to biographies. I want to do everything I can to help them read about the person in whom they are most interested.

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "One Simply Does Not Login to Mordor". (heh).

We are finishing up our unit on Google Docs this week. Students are finalizing their newsletter projects from last week and preparing for the unit 4 quiz. Please ask your students to show you their U3 Intro document which they have been adding examples of graphic design principles to as we have learned about designing newsletters. Following the quiz, we will begin discussing spreadsheets and going over how we will make pixel art and travel budgets for our next projects.

Please ask your students to sign into Google Classroom and show you the rubrics and any comments I may have left on their assignments if you are curious about a particular grade.

Exploring Multimedia

We kick off our next project this week by shifting gears and introducing a program used to design "vector" artwork called Adobe Illustrator. Vector graphics differ greatly from bitmap graphics such as the digital pictures we take with our phones. As soon as we begin enlarging a photograph the quality of the image begins  degrading. Vector artwork can be re-scaled to any size without a loss in quality whatsoever, since the information used to create the graphic is stored as formulas that are continually redrawn. We will begin by creating a simple  sample graphic that like looks something like a target, then transform our four concentric circles into our very first emoji!

Tutoring appointments are available every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help with difficult tasks and techniques.
