ELAR

We will be going to the library on Thursday for a special lesson on biographies. We will also be checking out and returning books while we are there.

Following the biographies lesson, each DATA 6th grader will be expected to pick out a biography, autobiography, or memoir of their choice to read. Parents, please help your child figure out a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of a real person, living or dead, about whom they would like to read.

We will be having a Grammar Keepers quiz on Tuesday.

Homework is once per week, assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays. Through January, it will be found on BrainPOP. Classwork not finished in class can usually be taken home to finish for homework as well.      I have classroom assignments represented on Google Classroom, even if they are not Google-based. This should be the first stop for any student who misses a day of class.

Each student should be reading a self-chosen book for at least 200 minutes per week. 45-55 of these minutes will happen in class, but the other 150+ should happen at home, hopefully spread out over the week in 20-30+ minute chunks.  All DATA 6th graders need to always have their own self-chosen book for SSR time in class twice per week, and opportunities to read when finished early.

The best way to contact me is through email but I am also on our 6th Grade Remind. rwayme@neisd.net

Tech Apps w/ Mr. G

Hi, everyone! Mr. Gonzalez here.

This week's ridiculous name for a Wifi connection is "Winternet is Coming". (heh).

Students are learning about Google Docs this week and how to approach learning a new workspace, or the interface of a program that has the tools they'll use when working with the program. Students use Google Docs in a lot of their classes already so this week we are making sure that we know exactly how to use the program. Please ask your student to log into Google Drive and show you their work this week and please ask them to show you their practice assignments. They need to have all practice assignments complete to be prepared for upcoming quizzes and tests. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

Exploring Multimedia

This week we are finishing up our Premiere video by adding Captions on top of the animated images and Credits at the end that tell our viewers where the images came from. This involves using the text tool to create internal assets that we control with Premiere rather than using a separate program like we did with our Photoshop Titles. Our dependence on spell checkers and the lack of one in Premiere means our best results come from writing in a Google Doc and then copying and pasting the short phrases into existing text assets. A lesson is provided for students to create the captions from scratch, but they have also been given two templates they can use to ensure maximum legibility. One is black text with a white glow around the letters and the other is white text with a black glow. Students can easily change the font and font size to customize the look of their Captions but the glow's high contrast is necessary so that viewers can quickly read words on top of moving images.

Tutoring appointments are available every morning before school and every day during lunch except for Thursday. Students are advised, if possible, to bring their lunch to school for those appointments to maximize time spent getting help with difficult tasks and techniques.
