**more questions will be added, so keep checking this for reference. If you have a specific question that is not answered below, email Mrs. Wylie at swylie@neisd.net or Mrs. Hubbard at ahubba1@neisd.net

How far can I go back on my application? What years am I able to include information from?

Please read your application very carefully. Faculty council will only be considering involvement in activities from the previous school year to the present (Fall 2022-Fall 2023). Please include co-curricular, service, and leadership activities that took place over the past year. Include activities from Fall 2022 - Fall 2023.

Is there a limit as to how many people are accepted into NHS?

No, there is no limit. Any applicant who displays the four pillars within their application and meets the criteria set by the district's scoring rubric will be selected.

If I applied last year and was denied, should I apply this year?

Absolutely! Applicants often gain more experience over the year and can use that in their application.  Or if the application was not completed correctly, this is an opportunity for the candidate to try again and become one of our members.

Does the applicant send the teacher evaluation form?

No. NHS sponsors will send the teacher evaluation form to the teachers. Every teacher that the applicant has had within their years at Johnson will be sent an evaluation form.  (These will be sent to only teachers that are still employed at Johnson)

Is a signature required for non-campus based sponsors?

Yes. However, if you are no longer in the same city or the sponsor has moved, you obtain confirmation via email. Make sure to include a contact phone number as well. Also the email needs to be sent from the organization email that applies. For instance, if a teacher from another school is verifying your participation in something, the teacher needs to verify from the email of employment. Parents CANNOT sign for activities on the application.

Can I include certificates from an activity to help validate and support my application?

Yes. As long as the certificate is verifying that the applicant participated in the activity. Please note that contact information of supervisors from the event/activity must be included in the proper place on the application and signatures should still be obtained

If I am senior, can I use the same activities from the year before when I tried applying?

No. Only activities from Fall 2022-Fall 2023 are applicable.

Can a parent signature replace a sponsor signature?

A parent CANNOT sign for their child’s activity. Another person that can verify that the student participated in the activity must sign the form for the applicant. The only place where a parent signature is acceptable is on the first page of the application form where the applicant fills out their schedule.

If the applicant is accepted, when are their volunteer hours able to be accepted as part of the membership requirement?

All volunteer hours will be completed after the applicant is accepted into the organization and the member has paid their dues and been inducted.  Since induction is predicted to be in October, we will open up Spring hours after the Fall deadline of December 8th, 2023.

What can be hand-written on the first page of the Nominee Application Form?

On page one, the student signature line and the parent signature line are the only places that should not be typed.

If one of my co-curricular organizations offers a community service event, and I attend it, can I list the co-curricular organization and the community service in two places on the application?

Yes. On the co-curricular portion of the application form, the applicant can list their participation in the co-curricular organization. On the community service portion of the application form, the applicant can put the specific event in which he/she volunteered for from that co-curricular organization.

If I recently moved to Johnson and was a member of NHS at my old school, can I become a member of Johnson National Honor Society?

Yes. You will need to provide your NHS certificate and have your sponsor from the previous school email our Johnson NHS sponsors. In this email, your previous sponsors must confirm that you were a member of good standing (i.e. you were not on probation.) Both must be done as soon as possible, and it is necessary to do so before the induction of new members.  Transfer members who transfer late in the year but have been attending Johnson for a while, could be penalized for the lack of service hours or meetings they missed per chapter's constitution.  Transfer members have 30 days from enrollment date to transfer their NHS membership.  Membership is complete upon verification and submission of dues.
