Ana was raised in the small village of Bukovo, Macedonia. Until the age of 12, it was just Ana and her mother; her father was in the United States. Macedonia was a poor country and Ana grew up with very little money and even lacked basic resources. At the time too, a war in Europe was heightening tensions and poverty, and risk.
Bukovo, Macedonia in present day
“Macedonia is a poor country; it was a poor country while I was there. I didn’t have any of the things you guys have here. As far as you know, playing games, and things, and going to movies, nothing like that.” - Ana Galovski

Growing up in Macedonia during World War II was scary and unpredictable. In Bukovo, German soldiers invaded the villagers' houses, including Ana and her family's home. The family could not say no; the government required them to house these soldiers. Outside her house was just as scary. Bomb threats and air raids fell over the village and there was a lot of fear.
